— WHAT'S THE HARM —

[1996]
Evelyn sat on the floor by the window, her legs stretched out as she absentmindedly traced patterns on the cold wooden surface. The cabin was quiet, the kind of quiet that bordered on oppressive, and she found herself increasingly restless, though she tried to hide it. She wasn't in the mood to talk, not after everything that had happened.
She heard footsteps approaching but didn't bother to look up. It wasn't until she sensed someone standing over her that she glanced up, her eyes meeting Natalie's anxious gaze.
Natalie shifted awkwardly, her hands fidgeting as if she wasn't sure how to begin. "Hey," she finally said, her voice hesitant. Evelyn didn't respond, her expression indifferent, clearly signaling she wasn't interested in talking.
But Natalie, ever stubborn, didn't budge. She lingered there, her nervous energy palpable. "I was thinking," she started, her tone almost sheepish. "Maybe we could play a game or something. You know, to pass the time."
Evelyn raised an eyebrow, her skepticism evident. "A game?" she repeated, not bothering to hide her doubt. The last thing she wanted was to engage in some forced attempt at bonding, especially with the way things had gone between them recently.
"Yeah," Natalie replied, trying to sound casual but failing miserably. She rubbed the back of her neck, her eyes darting around the room before settling back on Evelyn. "Paper football. It's simple, but it's fun. I mean, if you're up for it."
Evelyn was tempted to push her away, to tell her that she didn't get to waltz back in after everything and expect things to be okay. But as she looked at Natalie, her resolve wavered. There was something about the way Natalie was standing there, looking all nervous and hopeful, that tugged at Evelyn's heartstrings. That cute, nervous smile she wore as she tried to make amends was almost impossible to resist.
With a sigh, Evelyn begrudgingly scooted over, making room for Natalie to sit next to her. "Fine," she muttered, trying to sound more annoyed than she actually felt.
Natalie's face lit up, a triumphant grin spreading across her features. She even made a small fist pump, clearly proud of herself for winning Evelyn over, which, despite herself, made Evelyn crack a small smile.
