"I can't keep pretending. I love you, more than I've ever loved anyone. And it terrifies me, but it's the truth. I need you to know."

"She tells us not to take forever. How long does it take to drive a block?" Taissa broke the silence first, glancing at her phone.
Shauna sighed, her fingers drumming impatiently on the steering wheel. "Maybe she stopped to score drսg."
Taissa chuckled, though the sound was more weary than amused. "Oh, God. I hope not. Ah, the pay cut I took to run for Senate isn't gonna fund another stint in rehab."
Shauna turned to look at Taissa, her eyes widening in shock. "fսck, Tai, did you really?"
Taissa nodded, her expression serious. "Yeah."
Shauna's voice was laced with frustration. "Why? You're just enabling her to repeat the same pattern. She has to learn to handle her own shit."
Taissa leaned in her seat and looked Shauna in the eye. "And if she never does?"
Shauna sighed deeply and shrugged.
"Shauna. Don't you think about it?" Taissa's voice cut through the tension in the car, her tone both weary. "I got Simone, Sammy. You've got Jeff and-and Callie. Even Evelyn got Harry and Jack. Did we do something to deserve that?" She paused, her eyes searching Shauna's face.
"It's just fate that gave us that, right? Who does Natalie have?" Another pause, a deep breath. "Other than Travis, which we both know was a fucking train wreck, who does she really have?" Taissa's voice wavered slightly with emotion. "No one." Another pause followed. "And now she has less. We wouldn't be here if it wasn't for her. So I do what I can. Not just for her, for me."
Before Shauna could respond, the door suddenly slid open, startling both of them. Natalie hopped into the car.
"What the fuck took you so long?" Taissa blurted out, her frustration evident.
"I stopped at a gas station. But I couldn't find any cups," Natalie replied casually, holding up a bottle of alcohol.
"What? Where did you find a gas station in Jersey that sells liquor at 2 a.m.?" Shauna exclaimed, reaching to take a closer look at the bottle.
"I bought it off the clerk. How else do you think they get through the night shift?" Natalie retorted, a smirk playing on her lips as she handed the bottle over to Shauna.
