[1996]

Evelyn's eyes snapped open to chaos. The once serene interior of the plane was now a scene of panic and urgency. Natalie's voice pierced through the haze of Evelyn's grogginess as she struggled to comprehend the situation.

"Evelyn! Wake up!" Natalie's hands were shaking as she pressed an oxygen mask over Evelyn's face, her voice urgent and filled with fear.

Evelyn blinked, trying to focus. She became suddenly aware of a sharp pain in her stomach, a dull ache spreading through her body. With a sinking feeling, she looked down and saw the horrifying sight—the luggage compartment had shifted during the turbulence, crushing into her abdomen. Blood seeped from the wound, staining her clothes and Natalie's hands crimson.

Her gaze flickered to the side. Through the smoky haze, she saw Misty and Taissa frantically pulling at the emergency hatch, their faces streaked with tears and sweat. The air inside the plane was thick with smoke, the acrid smell burning Evelyn's nostrils.

To her horror, she noticed one of the girls at the back engulfed in flames, the fire spreading rapidly despite their desperate attempts to contain it.

"Natalie..." Evelyn's voice was hoarse, barely audible over the chaos. She reached out, gripping Natalie's bloodied hands in hers.

Natalie's tear-filled eyes met Evelyn's, her voice breaking. "Evelyn, we need to get you out of here..."

Evelyn shook her head weakly, her mind clearing slightly despite the pain. "Help... Misty and the others. Open the door."

Natalie's eyes widened in disbelief. "But... you're hurt, Evelyn. We need to get you out first."

Evelyn squeezed Natalie's hands tighter, her voice firm. "No. Go. Now."

Tears streamed down Natalie's face as she hesitated for a moment longer, torn between Evelyn's command and her instinct to protect her friend. With a choked sob, she nodded, scrambling to her feet.

"I'll come back for you, I promise," Natalie whispered, her voice trembling.

Evelyn managed a weak smile, her vision blurring from pain and exhaustion. "I'll hold you to that."

Natalie turned away, rushing to join Misty and Taissa at the hatch. They pulled together, muscles straining as they fought against the resistance of the door. With a final heave, the hatch swung open, revealing a rush of cool, fresh air outside.
