THANDO
Ugh. I look around my wardrobe for the hundredth time looking for something really sexy to wear but find nothing.
I really need to go shopping as soon as possible.
I finally decide to wear my black jean, white tee and my black heels. I spray my braids letting them loose since I don't have enough time to style them.
This shall do for today.
My phone rings and I quickly glance on the screen to see who's calling and the name Kayla pops up. She's so going to kill me.
I answer right away and before I even get the chance to say something she cuts me off, already fuming over the phone.
"Seriously Thando, what's taking you so long to get here?" She asks.
"I'll be there in half an hour, promise." I answer whispering for absolutely no reason.
"You said that two hours ago." She reminds me.
"This time I'm serious. I'm already in the car about to take off as we speak so I'll see you now now." I lie as I apply my lipstick.
I wait for her to say something but nothing. I look at my phone and see that she already hung up. I look at myself in the mirror one more time and quickly rush out to the kitchen taking the cake that I baked and the present. After enduring the longest one minute in the elevator I finally get to the garage and get in my black Range Rover and drive off.
Thirty minutes later I finally arrive at Kayla's childhood home and find a spot to park. I quickly get out of the car, take the cake, present and walk inside the house. I walk straight to the kitchen where I find my two best friends Kayla and Jasmine laughing at something at Jasmine's phone.
"Hello my two beautiful ladies." I greet them and they both turn in my direction raising their eyebrows.
"Thank God, you're here. I thought the birthday boy was not going to have a birthday cake this year." Kayla tells me as she approaches me and take the cake putting it in the fridge.
"You exaggerate." I roll my eyes putting my purse on the counter.
Jasmine walks to me giving me a hug and not a minute later Kayla joins in.
"Geez woman I love those jeans. They definitely hug that ass of yours in the right places." Jasmine compliments me as she turn me around.
"Totally. Are we impressing someone today?" Kayla ask raising her eyebrow.
My heart stops beating for a minute as I freeze. Shit, is it that obvious?
There's no way she knows I'm crushing on her brother. I laugh it off not ready to have this conversation with either of them.
The thing is my friends whom I've been friends with since kindergarten are very observant and nothing miss them. Once they get suspicious of something they make sure to investigate and get the answers no matter what it takes. I open the fridge and take a bottle of water drinking half of it as I try avoiding them.
"Well?" Jasmine asks impatiently.
"Well, what?" I ask playing dumb.
"Are we impressing someone? Is that why you took so long to get here because you were busy choosing which outfit to wear for hours?" Kayla eyes me. "Oh my God, who is he?" She continue asking clapping her hands giving me her full attention.
Your brother. I want to scream but instead I continue drinking my water. You got it right people, I have a major crush on Kayla's brother Matthew Waters and my best friend can never know under no circumstances. Years back when we we're teenagers Kayla made me and Jasmine promise to never fall for his brother and even though I did promise, I already had a crush on Matthew but agreed anyway for our friendship.
I mean we're twenty-five now so maybe the promise no longer applies?
Sometimes I wish I could just blurt it out but at the same time I would never ruin my friendship with Kayla because of a crush, especially when Matthew Waters only sees me as his little sister.
Ugh! The joy of having a crush.
My bottle is suddenly snatched from me and I gasp in surprise as I wipe water droplets from my mouth.
"Excuse you! That was very rude missy." I point to Jasmine as I continue to wipe my mouth.
"What's rude is you not answering a question when asked." She fires back unimpressed.
"For goodness sake, can't a girl wear pretty jeans without trying to impress anyone?" I ask doing a dramatic eye roll.
"Of course she can. But why did you you take so long to answer us?" Kayla questions glaring at me.
See? Observant friends.
"Cause I can. Enough of this." I dismiss them changing the subject. "Where is the birthday boy anyway?" I ask pecking at the sliding door for Matthew's son Trey but can't find him.
Yes. My hot crush is a single father and that alone makes me more hot for him every single time.
"I get it you're changing the subject but to answer your question he's not here yet. Thank you for baking his birthday cake again this year." Kayla says as she smiles at me.
"You know I would do anything for him." I tell her meaning every word. Trey is six today and I've been baking his birthday cake since his first birthday and I hope to never stop. I love that little guy.
"Oh Thando dear, I didn't realize you've arrived already." Kayla's mom, Linda says as she walks in the kitchen looking as elegant as the day I understood the meaning of the word. She gives me her motherly hug which I return gladly.
"I got here about five minutes ago." I tell her when we pull out of our hug.
"You look beautiful darling."
I blush even though I'm used to her complimenting me for years now. "Thank you mom."
"Alright then, I'll be outside greeting our guests. Once you three are done gossiping do come and join us in the backyard."
"Yes mom." We all say in union.
