THANDO
I arrive at the airport happy to be back home and at the possibility of seeing Matthew. I tried calling him today but he haven't yet returned my calls which is unusual because he always answers my calls or texts.
Maybe I should surprise him with something to eat at work?
No. Maybe invite him to dinner at my house?
Well, he has Trey so no.
Good Lord woman, stop being clingy. He will call when he finishes with whatever he is busy with.
I drag myself to the parking lot where I parked my car Friday exhausted from all the traveling but see a figure leaning on it.
Seriously, do people just lean on people's car without no shame?
It's like the more I get closer the more the person press their full body weight on top of my car. I walk to the person who is wearing a cap ready to have a word with him but he turns and my world stops as I see Matthew looking at me with my flowers on his hands. I smile long forgotten about him leaning on my car. The first thing I notice as I look at him is that his smile don't reach his eyes like always when he smiles making him look rather sad which worries me instantly.
"What's wrong?" I ask but instead of answering me he takes me in his arms hugging me tightly which worries me more. "Is everything okay? Is Trey okay?" I fire questions at him but he still doesn't answer me just squeeze me more to him without squeezing my ass which makes me more alert at his behavior because he always squeezes my ass when he's with me. "Baby?"
"Just hug me tightly, please." He says his first words to me today and I comply rubbing my hands on his back as I hold him tight. We hug in the parking lot for quite some time when he pulls back staring at me then bends kissing me sweetly. "Hi." He murmurs as he kisses me.
"Hi." I smile as we kiss my hands going to his hair playing with it.
"I've been missing you." He says as he breaks our kiss wiping something on my face. "You look more beautiful than the last time I saw you."
I blush hearing him say that. "Nothing has changed since you saw me Friday morning." I remind him but he shakes his head disagreeing. "If I could be granted one wish, it would be for you to see yourself through my eyes baby. Maybe then you'd see how I truly see you."
I close my eyes with my hands blushing at his words. This man knows how to make me swoon on spot without warning me all the time.
How can one not fall in love with him?
"Open your eyes." He whispers on my ear sending goosebumps all over my body with his voice and they automatically open.
A red Audi stops next to us then we watch as the windows rolls down an elderly woman looking at us with the goofiest smile on her face. "How about you take this beautiful lady to your house before you get her naked right in the parking lot, yeah?" She suggests and I die with embarrassment on spot.
"Of course Ma'am." Matthew says and she drives off smiling leaving us on our own. "Come on, let's get you home before I get you naked." Matthew says as he leads me to the drivers side.
"Where's you car?" I ask as I get in the car.
"I took an Uber to get here. I wanted to spend time with you. I hope that's okay?" He asks unsure as he takes my suitcase then load it in the back then climb inside.
"I'm glad you're here." I tell him as I drive us home.
"What's wrong?" I ask him again as I notice his mind wondering far away.
"Let's get home then I'll tell you all about it." He answers making me curiously.
I drive us to my place silently my own mind full of assumptions.
I hope he's not about to break up with me.
Good Lord, stop it Thando. I feel my hands sweating at the possibility of him breaking up with me.
Jesus, he wouldn't right? No, stop. He wouldn't have fetched me with my favorite flowers on the airport if he was about to break it off with me.
We finally arrive at my place my hands still sweating from nerve and the minute we get inside I suggest pouring wine for us but he asks for whisky instead which I pour for him.
"Are you breaking up with me?" I blurt out but instead of answering me he just stares at me with confused eyes. "Well?" I fish for an answer.
"What? No. Of course not." He says narrowing his eyes. "Let's sit so I can tell you." He takes my hand leading me to the dining table where we sit across each other. His phone beeps with a text which he takes a look at and his entire face instantly gets angry at whatever he is reading and he types back to whoever making him angry.
I've never seen him this angry. I fear for whoever he's talking to.
He puts his phone on the table with force exhaling deeply. "Miranda came to my workplace today." He says after a prolonged silence.
I don't know what I expected to hear but this was not it and I don't like it at all.
"What do you mean?" I ask confused at this news. I know Miranda left when Trey was born and never came back hence my confusion at hearing what he's saying.
Has she been staying around all the time and I knew nothing about?
Surely, not. I mean Kayla would of said something if that was the case.
"I mean she showed up to my office after six years of her disappearance demanding to see me as if I owed her shit." His say his anger evident on his face.
"What did she want?" I ask shocked by the news.
"She claims she wants a relationship with Trey." He suddenly stands up pacing. "How dare she comes into my life demanding a relationship with my son? My son whom she left at the fucking hospital without any explanation?"
His fuming now and I feel myself getting angry as well for the audacity Miranda has.
"Can you tell me what happened between you two?" I ask hopefully and he walks back to sit down then take my hand in his.
"Now?"
"Yes. I'd really appreciate it."
"I don't know." He's about to stand up when I stop him holding his hands tightly pleading with him with my eyes to tell me. "I can see how much your encounter with her has affected you and I want to understand everything so I can help you."
"How much do you know?"
"Just that she left you and Trey at the hospital after she gave birth to him." I tell him remembering how shocked I was when I heard the news from Kayla. Matthew flinch at my reply as if I just slapped him which makes me feel bad for forcing him to talk about this topic. "You know what? Never mind. We don't have to talk about this if you not up for it." I suggest even though I really really want to know but at the same time not wanting to rush him.
"No. I trust you and as my girlfriend you deserve to know the truth." He says warming my heart.
His eyes holds so much vulnerability which is my undoing. I walk to his side wanting nothing more than to comfort him as I sit on his lap hugging him and he wraps himself tightly to me.
"I guess I should start at the beginning, huh?"
"Yes." I whisper even though we're the only people in the room.
I've never liked Miranda for countless of reasons and I just know that as soon as he's done telling me about her my dislike for her will grow even more than before.
