THANDO
Saturday is finally here and Lucas has been texting me nonstop reminding me of our date. I thought about canceling but realized that maybe this date will do me good. I mean I know I'm going on this date to spite Matthew but I'm also going because I've decided I need to stop pursuing someone who's clearly not interested in me. I've done a lot of thinking this week, I've thought about confessing my love for Matthew and get it over with. I understand Matthew's hesitations but can't we be adults and admit what we're both feeling? I'm not naive to think it's going to be all rainbows and sunshine if we ever dated especially with Kayla in the picture but I'm certain we can make it work if we really try. I'm in my closet trying to find the right outfit for tonight when my phone vibrates next to me. I open my WhatsApp and see dozens of texts from my friends.
Kayla: If I didn't know better I'd say you're intentionally avoiding us.
Jasmine: I know we all have busy work schedules but Thando it's wrong of you not to check up on your friends.
Kayla: Please tell me you're not lying at home sick and choosing not to tell us like you always do.
Jasmine: Alright that's it we're coming over.
Best believe I'm not making up any excuses but believe me when I say my best friends are really that dramatic. Jasmine and Kayla take texting to another level. If it was up to them we would text each other twenty-four seven without a break. For people who work with their hands all day they sure have the time to text any time of the day. Kayla is an Architecture and Jasmine a Writer and in my books that means the should not have all the time to text all day long but my friends disagrees calling themselves Queens of multitasking.
I'm about to reply to their dramatic text when I hear a knock downstairs.
Huh? Could it be that Lucas didn't listen to me when I told him I'll meet him at the restaurant. Or maybe it's Matthew?
Now please don't judge me but a girl can't help hoping her crush could be on her doorstep. I check myself in the mirror and see my black dress has coffee stain all over it and do a quick change before I run downstairs. I open the door thinking I'll see Matthew but get a bit disappointed when I see my two best friends staring at me with worried expressions.
Ugh when will I learn?
"Oh sweetheart are you okay?" Kayla says in a motherly tone hugging me and Jasmine joins in.
I pull out of our hug while they both get inside leaving me to close the door. I follow them and see that one is holding a Chinese takeouts and the other one a bottle of red wine.
"Aren't you just lucky to have such good friends like us?" Jasmine asks me as she sits on the couch while Kayla emerges from the Kitchen holding three glasses of wine.
"What are we celebrating?" I look between them wondering if I missed something.
"It's literally nine-thirty am." Jasmine answers like it's normal for us to be drinking this early.
"See? I told you something is wrong with our Thando. Usually she's doesn't care what time is it we have a glass of wine." Kayla tells Jasmine like I'm not in the room with them.
I roll my eyes. "You know that's not true at all. We only drink early when we have a valid reason to drink early." I correct them.
"We have one." They both answer at the same time.
I narrowed my eyes at them questionably. "Which is?"
Kayla glares at me. "You've not replied to our texts."
I laugh at their absurd reasoning. "This is your reason?"
"For calming our nerves because we thought something happened to you." Jasmine adds in.
"It's nine-thirty in the morning, not everyone logs in on their socials first thing in the morning." I tell the both of them as I take my food and eat.
"Well you've been acting off and we're your friends meaning it's our job to notice everything you're going through. Your off-ness is felt even in the way you text us." Kayla points her perfectly manicure finger at me. "So talk to us and don't you dare say it's nothing."
Jasmine nods passing a glass of wine to me while sipping hers.
I look at my friends wanting nothing more than to talk to them about Matthew and share everything that went down between us. I would like to hear their take on this and their advices while helping me navigate the whole situation but I'm scared of Kayla's reaction and losing our friendship. I trust Jasmine with my life and I know if I told her she wouldn't say anything to Kayla but I never want to put her in a situation where she has to lie to our friend which is why I've said nothing to her at all.
"I was going to tell you guys after tonight but since I can't surprise you with anything..." I clap my hands smiling. "I'm going on a date." I blurt out.
Jasmine chokes on her drink while Kayla has her mouth open just staring at me.
Not the reaction I was looking for but okay.
"Geez...Why those reaction? And Kayla please close your mouth."
"Excuse you!! Please allow me to have this moment. My best friend is going on a date after years of trying to get her to go to one."
"How long have you known you're going on a date." Jasmine asks suspiciously.
"How is that your first question after I tell you I'm going on a date?" I ask my friend.
"Answer her." Kayla adds in.
Oh hell. I'm not going to get away from this one.
I whisper. "For a week."
"What? And we're only hearing about this today? Where you even going to tell us if we didn't show up?" Jasmine fires questions after questions angry.
"Of course I was going to tell you both." I tell her guilty.
I really was going to tell them but this week has been crazy and my mind has been all over the place with Matthew and if it wasn't for Lucas texting nonstop I probably would of canceled our dinner plans.
Kayla eyes me. "I don't know what's happening with you Thando but lately you're more secretive than ever."
"From the bottom of my heart I'm sorry. I was going to tell you both about everything and I know it's not an excuse but I had a busy week and I guess it slipped my mind."
"It's not but I'll forgive you because you're finally going on a date after years." Jasmine tells me. "Now tell us everything."
"I'm going out with Lucas, the gym guy. You guys know how long he's been asking me out."
"The hunk one from our gym gym?" Jasmine asks.
"The one and only."
"Now that's one hell of a hot man. I bet he's got a good size dick that will have you dickmatize by the end of the night." Kayla swoon in my couch dreamily.
"Not everyone is into one night stands like you." I remind her but of course she rolls her eyes.
"Ugh I bet his a good kisser too." She adds.
I want to tell her I don't care about any of those things from Lucas even though he is an attractive guy. Six foot, blond hair and a hunk body that no doubt gets him numerous girls numbers.
"Get your mind out of the gutter lady. It's just a date. No need to start planning our marriage in your head."
"Well one of us has to get married at some point and the rate we're going it's you. I know I'm definitely not getting married any time soon or ever." Jasmine tells me.
"What Jasmine said."
I look at my best friends who are both beautiful inside and out. I know we all want to experience the kind of true love that last a lifetime. Even though to the outside world we appear as boss ladies who needs no one we know we all want someone to come home to at the end of the day. Kayla has experience what she thought was love once upon a time and when that relationship ended she haven't been able or rather willing to open her heart to anyone else. Jasmine on the other hand she experienced a childhood love like no other but circumstances forced them apart and no matter how hard she's been trying to convince us but mostly herself that she's over her childhood lover we all know that's not true at all.
Kayla's voice brings me back to the moment when she asks me. "Do you know where he's taking you out or is a surprise?"
"Wait for it." I tell her as she chews on her noodles. "Matthew's restaurant."
"What?" Jasmine raise her voice.
"You do know that my brother is going to kill Lucas, right?" Kayla reminds me of something I already know. Of course I don't want him to kill poor Lucas I only just want him to get jealous and see that I can do better than him. Matthew Waters is one overprotective human and once upon a time I used to find his caveman act hot but unfortunately for him I don't no more and in this case don't care what he thinks.
Okay I'm lying he's a hot caveman and I do want his reaction tonight.
"I just hope he's not at work tonight." I lie but deep down I want him available and to see me.
"I doubt but we're grown ups now hopefully he doesn't scare poor Lucas if he happens to be around. You sure you don't want to go dine somewhere else?" Kayla asks me worryingly.
"Absolutely not." I answer way too quickly.
"Of course not." Jasmine eyes me suspiciously. My heart stops beating for a second with the way she's looking at me.
Does she know something? Surely, not.
She would ask me if she suspected me, right?
"Anyways lets go try some sexy outfits, we have someone to impress." She says those words staring right at me.
What?
Kayla and her stand up already walking upstairs leaving me with my thoughts.
If Jasmine knew she'd definitely remind me of our promise to Kayla and she would have said something for sure.
"You coming hun?" Kayla asks.
"Be there in a minute."
I move my ass upstairs not wanting to dwell too much on Jasmine. For now I'm focusing on tonight and going to make sure I'll enjoy every second of the night with no regrets.
