CHAPTER FOURTY-THREE

MATTHEW
The silence is killing me.
Not knowing anything is eating me alive and as much as I tried sitting down I couldn't.
The police came over, asked a bunch of questions and briefed me about their theory of what really happened at Thando's house. They also told me that they found a note in Thando's bag that proved to them that Miranda was threatening Thando's life.
That was hours ago and I still can't fathom how evil Miranda was to take away her life after she shot Thando twice probably thinking she's dead before she took her own life.
"Matthew." I raise my head and see my sister holding a cup of coffee for me.
I take it from her. "Thank you."
"Do you have any idea what could have possibly caused Miranda to do this horrible thing?"
"God, I hate hearing her name." Jasmine mutters next to me and honestly I don't blame her.
For the first time in my life I hate Miranda with a passion I never knew I possessed. When Miranda left me I couldn't bring myself to hate her but today as I stand in this hospital I hate her so much. I hate her for being a coward, for killing herself and leaving me to deal with all of this behind.
How do I explain to my son that her mother killed herself and worse part after she just introduced herself to him.
How do I face the parents of the woman I love with my whole being and explain to them that it was my ex that put their daughter in a hospital bed?
"Matthew?" Kayla pushes on and I let out a deep breath and tell her everything to that happened.
"How did I miss all the signs Kayla? How could I not have seen how evil she was?"
"Hey, none of that. You couldn't have possibly known that she is capable of killing anyone. Don't even think about blaming yourself." My sister tells me as she wipes her swollen eyes.
"How do I explain all of this to her parents? Good God, I'm sure they don't even know we're together." I cover my eyes with my hands guilt consuming me.
Jasmine answers. "They will understand. You know very well they will."
"I don't understand. How is it possible that I was with her just this morning but now she's lying in that room?"
Kayla asks in surprise. "You were?"
"Yes, I went over to apologize." I tell both of them and feel Jasmines stare on me as she chews on her lip as if stopping herself from saying something.
"I know you want to tell me how stupid I am for letting her go and being the cause of all her pain."
"I do but I'll spare you since we're in the hospital but you really are stupid Matthew Waters."
"She's right. Please do the right thing and grovel like your life depends on it when my friend wakes up because she loves you so much and deserves all the happiness in this world." Kayla tells me.
"I plan to. She's my everything." I say as emotions takes over me.
"And you do too. It's time you forgive yourself and let go of the past before you lose the kind of love that is really rare to find. It's time you allow yourself to trust Thando wholeheartedly to love you, both you and Trey. Thando is the most loyal person I know Matthew. I know with certainty that she will never betray you." She says firmly.
Jasmine adds in. "I think she's been in love with you her whole life."
"And I love her too." I whisper. "I promise to make this right." I vow meaning every word.
"You better otherwise watch out for your balls. You don't want to experience my wrath." Jasmine tells me seriously and I smile despite everything at how much they love their friend.
I look at my watch and see the time is seven pm.
"I should call Trey and let him know I won't be coming home."
"Mom is taking care of him but yeah I think you should still check on him."

After talking to my son, assuring him that everything is okay the surgeon finally makes her way to us and we all stand up bracing ourselves for more news.
"Any updates?" Jasmine asks the moment she stands before us.
"The surgery was successful. We managed to remove both bullets and everything looks fine."
"Oh, thank God." Kayla says as she holds on to Jasmine.
"When can we see her?" I ask.
"She's still in recovery room for now but will be out in a few hours then transported to her room."
"Can we see her then?"
"Yes. I believe an exception was made in this case for all of you to see the patient?"
"Yes doctor." I answer.
"Alright. Only two people are allowed at a time. And remember she needs all the rest she can get."
"Understood."
"Good. One of the nurses will let you know when you can see her."
"Thank you doctor."
Relief sweep over me as the doctor leave us and I finally sit down letting her words sink in.
Thando is going to be fine and I'll be seeing her in a few hours.
Thank God!
Tears form at the back of my eyes as I think about how I almost lost her. I say a quick prayer, grateful to know she's safe and still breathing.
"Told you she's a fighter." Kayla tells me as she sits next to me and Jasmine joins in on my other side.
"You did." I agree as I wrap my arms around both of them closing my eyes.
