MATTHEW
I toss my phone on the couch next to me and throw myself on the other couch closing my eyes my whole body welcoming the rest its getting after overworking myself this afternoon. I allow sleep to take over me for a minute but before I know it I hear banging on my door startling me. I listen again for the banging and sure enough the person bangs the door harder this time around.
Huh? Who could be banging the door this hard.
I stand up quickly walking to the door and see my sister looking disheveled as she stares at me through the glass door tears running down her face.
"Kayla, what's wrong?" I ask her the moment I open the door holding her by her shoulders attempting to wipe the never ending tears on her face.
"We have to go immediately Matthew, grab everything you need right now."
"Tell me right now what's going." I say shaking her to make her focus as she look lost.
"Thando was sh-shot Matthew, we need to get to the hospital right now."
By God's will we arrive at the hospital and immediately run to the emergency room and find Jasmine on the waiting room leaning by the wall.
"Any news?" I ask Jasmine the second I stand facing her.
"Not yet." She tells me as she shakes her head. "The doctor said she will update me as soon as she can."
"Fuck." I rub my forehead. "Do you have any idea what happened?"
"Yes, the woman that called me told me that they found Thando shot in her house."
"How do you know this?" I ask as worry and panic takes over me.
"I'm listed as one of her emergency contact."
"Tell me everything, please." I beg her as I take a sit on the bench unable to stand any longer with how hard I'm shaking.
"I received the news and immediately called Kayla telling her to inform everyone while I drove over to Thando's to find out what really happened and to see for myself because I couldn't believe it. I mean who could shoot Thando of all people, you know?"
I nod urging her to go on with my hand.
"When I arrived at the woman that called me told me the ambulance already took Thando to the hospital." She continues but I see the hesitation on her face as if she's hiding something.
"What else?" I ask.
"Then I tried getting inside the house but they wouldn't allow me and as I turned to leave I saw one of the police covering Miranda's body."
"What?" I shout as I stand up, all color drained on my face. "Wh-what, are you sure Jasmine?"
"Yes." She answers as she sit on the bench sobbing.
"What the actual fuck?" Kayla looks at me puzzled and I just stare at her trying to piece everything together.
Is it possible that Miranda shot Thando and Thando shot her back as self defense? I rake my brain for answers but give up when I come up with nothing.
What the fuck happened in there?
"Did you call Thando's parents?" Kayla ask. Jasmine nods. "But they're out of the country which means they will be here tomorrow."
Jesus, Thando's parents are definitely not going to forgive me for being the reason their child got shot.
How do I explain to her parents that it's my ex that shot their daughter?
I just fucking know Miranda is the cause of Thando being here.
I see the doctor heading our way and I stand straight bracing myself for the news.
"She's going to need surgery as soon as possible. Abdominal gunshot can result in wide range of etiologies and multi-organ system dysfunction which is why the quicker we do the surgery, the better her chances."
I feel myself sway loosing balance as the world spins around me. I balance myself on the wall as I try to get my breathing intact.
So many questions clouding my head.
Didn't I just see her this morning?
How can I leave her like that? How the fuck did I not see this coming? How could I allow Miranda to get that close to her without any protection?
"Which one of you will be signing the papers?"
"Me." Jasmine answers as she follows the doctor.
"Thando is strong Matthew, she's going to be alright." My sister wraps her arms around me.
"She has to Kayla, we still have so much to do together. I will never be able to forgive myself if she d.." I tell her failing to say the words out loud. "I still need her." I finish instead.
"We all do."
