Chapter Fifteen: Alice in Alex's World

The peaceful night in Wonderland went by, I slept in Ace's arms. Maybe it was a mistake... because instead of Ace's steady heartbeat,

it's my own against a monotonous machine. I can feel bandages where the roses were, scabs underneath... and a police officer at the foot of my bed with the nurse.

"I think it's a bit early to interrogate the boy, Sir... we must give him time to recover!"

"Four days of sleep is enough rest, Nurse..." they both have noticed my eyes being open and staring at them. I've been asleep for three days... which explains why I don't feel fatigued and can immediately open my eyes.

"Let's perform a mandatory vital check," says the Doctor, who then took 10 minutes to shine a light against my eyes and record my pulse and blood sugar. After which, the officer approaches me kindly.

But, I beat him to it. "Where is... my cat?"

"Cat?" The nurse chimes in, "Oh, after veterinary treatment, she is in the care of someone who claimed to be your friend. I have informed this friend that you're awake. He should bring the cat to you."

"Thank you," I whispered, relieved and yet comforted that Alex took care of my baby Meadow. Alex really cares about her...

Just like how Ace cares about—

"Young man, I am here to ask you a few questions about the incident. Where were you at that time?"

I answered with little energy, "I was at school. There was a fight that involved me... and I went to wash blood off my nose after getting involved. Since my nose was still bleeding, I decided to come home. That's when I found the burning building."

"It checks out," says the police, writing in his notebook. "Many witnesses at that fight which ended at 9:35... but nobody saw you when you were absent between the hours of 9:35 and 10am, which is when you came home."

"I was cleaning myself. I was with someone... Alex." His other self and I had fun with each other's bodies—stop Erin, Jesus José Maria!

I then closed my eyes to mask my fluster. "Why are you asking me this? Interrogating me like I'm a suspect?"

"We just needed to know who may have caused the fire. We found traces of kerosene lining the walls."

I blew up, "Why would I purposely light up the only place I have with MY CAT in the room left to burn, then burn myself trying to get her?! I lost everything but her officer, why would I do that?!"

"We didn't say you're the main suspect," he says, "We look at it from on all angles. I am just asking you questions to see if you have any enemies that could do that to you. Like, that fight you were involved in?"

"I—" No. Couldn't it be... Stephen?

"Your disappearance after the fight may have given the people involved some time to commit arson against you. Can you name names?"

"I..." I can. But before I can answer, we hear loud commotion from the outside that comes with a very familiar voice.

"I don't care, I want to see him!"

"Sir, you'd have to be direct family—"

"I'm the only one he has, out of my way!" The door was thrown open to see a calm Knox Sinclair and an angry Alex Montgomery gently holding Meadow in his arms, who then proceeded to yell after seeing me. "Erin!"

Ace with the blue eyes! I immediately burn up knowing that I've touched what was inside those pants—JESUS JOSÉ MARIA that is Alex Montgomery!
