"I've never done anything like this before, but I'm excited," Jude said, rubbing his hands together with the biggest smile as he looked around the kitchen counter covered with ingredients. We were going to recreate a classic Victoria sponge cake, his mom's favourite cake. Alexis was out of town for a few days, which meant I had him all to myself.
I knew all about Alexis' silly idea of trying to get me fired, but of course, I was ahead of her. It amazed me that she had caught on to the game I was playing; it was practically dangling right in front of her face. Yet, despite her attempts, I always managed to stay one step ahead.
It was crucial for me to stay ahead because my ultimate goal remained unchanged: I wanted to be the one he confided in, the one he turned to for support and companionship. I wanted him to be mine.
The whole world knew Jude was a mama's boy, and Alexis's biggest mistake was underestimating the significance of that bond.
My strategy had always been to leverage this deep-rooted connection to my advantage. When I proposed the idea of celebrating Jude's mother's birthday, I knew I was taking a calculated risk, but one that could potentially solidify my position in Jude's life.
To be fair, his mother was genuinely nice to me like I said she took a chance even when Jude was uncertain, there's something about her I wished my own mother was but atlas I wasn't lucky enough to have that naturally.
"I haven't done this in years," I said, watching a TikTok video to refresh my memory.
"If it's absolute shit, I hope I don't get dragged," he said, his accent thick and charming. I loved hearing it.
"You won't," I mumbled, still engrossed in the video. "If it flops at least she knows you tried. It's the thought that counts. But again, I won't let you flop"
"Thanks," he laughed, "You're right, she has done everything for me the least I can do is try" he smiled, I loved seeing his smile.
"Exactly, think we can start now I remember my way around this thing. We need to cream the butter and sugar together," I said, handing him a bowl and a mixer.
He looked at the mixer, then at me, raising an eyebrow. "How do I use this thing?"
I laughed. "Here, let me show you." I stood behind him, guiding his hands to hold the mixer properly. My hands covered his as I demonstrated how to use it. "Just like this."
Our closeness made the moment feel intimate. I could feel the warmth of his body against mine, and his scent was intoxicating. His hands were steady under mine, and for a moment, it felt like we were perfectly in sync.
"Got it," he said, his voice softening as he turned his head slightly to look at me. Our faces were inches apart, and I could see the twinkle of amusement and something else in his eyes.
"Good," I replied, feeling a blush creep up my cheeks. I stepped back, trying to regain my composure.
"Have you ever done this on your own?"
He asked.
"Yeah my nanny taught me, so it became a hobby whenever I was stressed, I baked a cake.I guess, having a fast metabolism was in my favour" I said which made him laugh.
"I'm completely clueless in the kitchen, Alexis too so it's kind of cool you know how to do this" he said.
"Basic life skill" I smiled, "not to brag or maybe just a little"
"Whatever mate" he said rolling his eyes.
"Now let's add the sugar and mix until it's light and fluffy," I instructed, watching as he carefully poured in the sugar.
