If it was not noticed, Whirl seems to be quite similar to two of the bots of the Sigma 17 crew. It is actually funny because she actually is but also is not.
When Christmas came around on Earth a long while back, Blades and Chase decided to try and go to the Well and see if it would still do what it did way before the war even started. They didn't think the Well would give them a sparkling, they even told one another that if it doesn't then they may have no chance at sparklings at all.
Out of some Christmas miracle, they were given Whirl. Even though she came from the Well, they still loved her very dearly like she is their own. It would be assumed she really knew the Sigma 17 members but Heatwave was more of a stranger to her and she never really understood Boulder.
It was interesting to have the academy opened up way later than planned but it left it so then Whirl could actually join. None of the other recruits actually know that Blades and Chase are her 'creators' but it would be rather awkward to tell about it.
Imagine how awkward it is for Heatwave when Whirl does something bad in school.
