Halloween night was all glitz and glamour, Nat's mother loved Halloween. I didn't have much time to have much fun considering I was worrying about August the entire time, Julie had taken her and started showing her off to all her friends. I sat out on the back deck with Nat drinking the sherbet punch Julie made.

"You're mom knows a lot of people, huh?"

"She's very social." he smirks.

"I'm just afraid that someones going to snatch August up," I half laugh and turn to him "you should've seen grandma cat woman in there, she looks like a baby snatcher!" I laugh this time.

"Nah Grace won't snatch her, she's got fifteen of her own grand kids she's always bragging about." we both laugh and sit in silence for a while.

"I saw Mark yesterday." I waited watching his face for his expression, his eyebrows lifted and he looked over at me.

"And?"

"I just saw him," I turned away from his gaze, rubbing my arms as a small gust of wind gives me a chill. It was starting to get cold and the thin shiny fabric of this costume isn't helping me keep warm. Nat's costume was a loose white shirt and black 'pantaloons', while mine was a thin maroon dress that fell to my knees, and had a faux fabric corset and thin white sleeves. While I did have tights on it was still chilly and my stupid fabric hat kept falling off. "and then made my way out of Party District as fast as I could..."I looked back at him.

"Why would you do that? I thought you wanted to talk to him? He's ignored you since August was born and you're okay with that?"

"Of course I'm not! But if he doesn't care then why should he get to see her at all?"I knew as soon as I said it that it was truly what I thought. "You're her dad, not him. He hasn't even made the effort to be." I lifted my feet up under myself and leaned toward him, he put his arm around me.

We didn't stay like that for long, Julie knocked on the sliding door and opened it.

"Come get some warm cider, it's chilly out here!" she said, full smiles. We both obeyed and stood to go inside. Julie had already turned and gone back inside with the baby. Nat lean down and kissed me before we walked inside which left me with a big ole smile because I realized he cared. After we threw out our punch we found and shared a glass of cider, then I found August whom was attached to Julie's arms, and Julie had to tell everyone about her son and I. I didn't mind, I loved Julie. She was like my second mom, and I'd stayed over here just to come see her and let her see August sometimes.

Soon it was clear that the party wasn't going to die down and we said our goodbyes and left. August fell right asleep in her car seat and the whole car is quiet. The music was barely audible because it was turned down so low and I leaned my head on the cold window, I was so tired.

"How'd you like it?" I look over, my head still on the window.

"It was fun,"I say "I haven't been around that many people in a while."

"Just wait 'til Thanksgiving."  he laughs and I join in.

"Your mom does seem the party planning type." I smile. "My mom's just a mess about these things."

When we're home I carry August inside and Nat and I sit on the couch and watch a movie. I hadn't watched a movie in a long time, it was perfect just the two of us.
