After an unsuccessful twenty minutes of trying to feed August, the nurse ended up leaving the room to go get me a bottle of formula to give her. The kid was already stubborn, like myself. While the nurse whom I had not seen the name of left, Ross asked if I would like some help onto the recliner that was next to the isolette to feed her and have what they called 'kangaroo time' which was basically holding your baby to your chest. I took up her offer of help and looked up to Nat who had been making faces and talking to the baby.

"Would you hold her for a minute while I get situated?" he looked shocked as if he thought he was never going to hold her.

"Um,"he held out his hands. "I've never held a newborn before."

"You'll be fine! What is it with the dads and holding babies geez!" Ross laughed.

August took the bottle the first time I held it up to her, which I found funny because it seemed like she was being picky. The day went by fast and I hadn't even noticed how hungry I was because I'd fallen asleep with August in my arms.

My hearing is what woke me up. That moment where you wake up but you are just listening for a couple minutes without realizing you're still asleep.

"I mean I don't go around changing diapers all the time." the whispering voice of whom I assumed was Nat.

"It's easy, here." a pause, and then I hear shuffling and crackling of plastic. "Are you sure it won't hurt her if I put it over her umbilical cord?"

"No it won't," another pause "see? And she doesn't even care, she's not even antsy, it's the clothes that are the hardest to put on, but you don't have to worry about that yet. Oh! I brought the hat you asked me to bring," a pause. "here."

Right about this time I started to open my eyes and since I'd thought for a quick minute that I'd been dreaming I didn't entirely remember what they'd said.

"Hey," my voice deep and hoarse from sleep.

"Look who's awake!" my mom said quietly.

"Aw, look at her little hat." Nat held her up to show me better. He leaned down and I pushed her hat up a little over her brows. "How long was I asleep?" I ask sitting up a bit.

"A while but it's okay, you need the sleep." August holds on to my pinky and shakes it a bit.

"I just don't want to leave her." I say as she puckers her lips, her canulas slipping from her ear so I quickly and easily fix it by ajusting the tape on one side.

"She's going to be fine, you can stay as long as you want in here," he said as he sat August back in her isolette. "Do you need anything? Snack? Use the restroom?" I must have given him a face as I said;

"Hm, that's, weird."

"What?"

"I'm not even the tiniest bit hungry."

"Sometimes it takes a day or so," my mom chirped up. She was reaching her hand in the bed rubbing August's feet. "with the medication and all." I look up at my annoying -but helpful- IV pole that's next to me.

"Oh yeah, the nurse came back in earlier and checked on the baby, but she said everything is looking good and she could possibly be home within the week." A smile spread across my face.

"That's great!" I hold my arms up halfway for a hug. He leans down and gives me a careful hug and a kiss. "Love you." I whispered in his ear before he pulled away.
