I woke in a blue, cold, antiseptic smelling hospital room. I had an IV hooked to my arm, and it made my arm sore. My head felt to heavy to hold up so I laid back, the light shown right in my face. I could hear faint voices near the door, but from the hall. What happened? Did I, did I faint? That had never happened before! I look over and see a sleeping Sam her dyed black hair tangled in her face, she's asleep in a very uncomfortable looking faux leather blue chair.
"Pst! Sam!" I whisper yell.
"What?" she whispers in a daze, only half awake.
"What happened?" she sat up quickly realizing who I was.
"Ella! You're awake."
"Yeah, " I look around, I can still hear whispering in the hall and a monitor beeped beside me. I started to panic. What was wrong with me? Was the baby okay? I breathed heavy and sat up again. All I cared about was my baby, what was to happen? "Why am I here?"
"You fainted from dehydration, they have you hooked up to an IV for fluids. They went ahead and did a blood test to make sure, so congratulations!" Shepulled the chair closer to my bed "They wanted to make sure everything was okay so they also did an ultrasound, You want to see it?" I nod and Sam walks over to the table that had a computer sitting on top. She lifted several glossy pictures that were stuck together and set them on my bed. I leaned over with one hand on my mouth looking at the tiny bean shape that was supposedly in my belly. 'This isn't real!' I thought. 'Is this real?' This would be life from now on, doctors appointments, preparing for a baby. A baby girl or baby boy. Which would it be? I didn't care much but I was curious. A tear fell on my hand, and I laughed. 'Who would've thought I'd be me? I'd be the one to get knocked up.'
"What about Mark?"
"They won't let him in. Immediate family only." she sat back down and the door opened. Mom rushed over once she saw me awake.
"Ow!" she accidently hit the needle in my arm. She gave a pained face and stepped back. "How long have I been here?" I ask, directing the question to Sam, but mom answers.
"All night, and then all day today. They are going to keep you here tonight as well for observation. "
"You didn't tell him did you?" I look back down at the pictures in my lap. I'd be the right thing to tell him, wouldn't it?
"I think we've come to the agreement, that that is your choice to make." I mouth a silent 'thank you.'
A dark girl who looked a little less than thirty, who had short black hair and was wearing a white doctor coat and blue scrubs, knocked once and then walked in and over to my bed. She had a warm smile and that made me uncomfortable, they always smiled before giving bad news.
"I'm doctor Garr, how are you feeling?" How did I feel? Better, I guess. I didn't feel sick.
"Kind of hungry." I shrugged and she grinned and let out a small laugh.
"That's common, but the IV feeding nutrients intravenously so, you will be brought something from the cafeteria later for dinner. Alright?" I nod. It was worth a try. "Now, I think congratulations are in order." she pointed to the pictures in my lap.
"Thanks." I tell her, it was weird that people would congratulate me.
"Let me say, you are going to be just fine. You are in here from dehydration because of the morning sickness." it should be changed to, all day everyday sickness. "We gave you some medication to stop the nausea.-" I cut her off as my eyes widened.
