I tired so hard to sleep. I couldn't. The beeping, the smell of hand sanitizer, and the nurses coming in and out of my room. My mother was asleep in an uncomfortable looking chair and Nat slept on the window seat/bed that looked awfully hard and uncomfortable. When a nurse came in at around one in the morning from the monitor going off I turned the tv volume down.
"How are you feeling? Do you need anything?" she wrote something down on my paperwork and pressed some buttons.
"No." I say.
"Alright." she smiles, and as she turned to leave I stop her.
"Actually can I get out of this bed?" I ask. She looks at me. "I just can't sit her anymore." I tell her.
"I can get you a wheelchair." she says. "If you'd like."
"Please?" I nod.
Soon she comes back in with a wheel chair and she helps me off the bed and into the chair, without pulling on any tubes. She detaches the Iv bag carefully from the pole and onto the one that was attached to the wheelchair. She asks if I need the blanket off the bed and even though I tell her 'no' she folds it and sets it on my lap. She pushes me out into the hall.
"Where do you want to go?"she asks
"I've got it, it's okay."
"I'd feel better if someone was with you, and have nothing better to do."
"You sure?"I ask.
"I am supposed to make sure the patients are doing well, and my job is to monitor you, so yes I'm sure."she smiles and I catch a glimpse at her name tag. Her name is 'Kacey'. "So, where to?"
"I don't know, I just needed to do something I guess."
"So a tour it is." Apparently I was in the maternity ward and I could tell because every once in a while you could hear someone yelling. There were more nurses and doctors roaming around checking on patients than normal and it was more lit too.
Our first stop of course was the nurses station, the large window view near the elevator, passing the door to the waiting room, and then the nursery.
There were so many screaming and sleeping babies in their little beds which were all in neat little rows.
"Yours could be in there soon, you know." she says.
"Yeah, it kind of freaks me out."
"Why?"I looked up at her.
"Because I'm just learning to be an adult while I go through all of this."
"You don't look that young." she says.
"I don't know if I'm supposed to take that as a compliment." she laughs
"I mean, you look like you can handle it."
"Yeah, I guess" I look back into the room as a nurse wheels one of the beds out, presumably to take the baby to it's mother.
After we walked around a while and talked she took me back to my room. She lowered the bed so I could get on it and reattached my IV bag to the pole by my bed. She adjusted the monitor and checked for abnormalities. Then she left me be and tried and tried to fall asleep.
