Today was the day.
I was nervous for Marcus.
What if he got chosen?
I shook that thought away.
He wasn't going to be chosen.
I got dressed and headed to the living room where my grandma and Marcus was. He looked at me and smiled.
"Ready to go, sis?"
I nodded.
"Yes."
"Nervous?"
"For you, yes."
"So you're saying you can't get chosen?" He teased.
I shrugged.
"Anything is possible." I quoted grandma from yesterday and she nodded at us.
"Let's go." Grandma Judith said and we left the house.
We hailed down the first cab we saw but it was full with people going to the auditorium. It took us some time to get to the auditorium but we got there eventually. We sat down at the back seats, looking down at the podium.
The auditorium was built like a football stadium, except there's no field in the middle.
The mic was tapped by a witch and my eyes twinkled in amazement.
"Silence." She commanded.
Immediately, everyone fell silent under her command, like her voice has sort of magic in it that made everyone shut up.
That was the high mage, Amoya. Grandma told me this upon my first time coming here and every year I see her, I become more fascinated with her.
"As everyone knows, we're here to commence with the chosing."
She was the only one from the nations who came this year.
Last year, it was her and the faerie queen. The year before, her, the faerie queen and the alpha of the werewolf nation and the year before that. Years before I started coming here, it would be the rulers of the four nations.
"This year, we do things differently." The high mage said. "As usual, one hundred and twenty of you will be selected to serve the four nations. You'd be randomized to a nation but this year and the following years to come, you'll be placed at a nation." Everyone stayed silent as they listened to her. "Let the choosing commence."
The high mage stepped back from the podium and a guard stepped forward with the list.
The high mage casted her usual spell where she'd let the list be displayed above everyone as the names are called.
"The Faerie Nation: June Knight, Karim Lewis, Kia Banks," and the names began.
I held Marcus's hand tightly as we listened to the list.
Thirty people went to each nation as usual.
"The Werewolf Nation, Hannah Rogue, Jada Yeager." It kept going.
"The Vampire Nation, Nickel Brown, Malika Hanson, Bianca Lovestone. "
The list is almost done and I haven't heard my name or Marcus's name.
The scariest thing about this is that they didn't do it in alphabetical order so no one knew what was coming.
"- Laura Smith and Lauren Holness."
Yes! My name isn't there.
Marcus looked at me and I looked at him with a smile on my face.
"What?"
He pointed above the auditorium where my name was being displayed in blue cursive magic.
What...
"Get up." A guard said as they grabbed my arm roughly.
"Ma." I called out to my grandmother. There was nothing she could do, she couldn't protest, nothing.
They made an example out of someone last year when they tried to take back their daughter. He was beheaded by the high mage in front of everyone and her words still rang in my head up til this day, "Let this be an example for anyone who tries to interfere with the process. "
The guard used his powers and soon, I was being thrown into a carrier van.
I hit my head on the way in and the last thing I saw was another girl being thrown into the van.
