"did someone hurt you, princess?"

"where did that come from?"

"you've been... pretty clingy today"

you were sitting comfortably on his lap, your legs and arms wrapped around him, while you rested your head on his shoulder.

"do you want me to let go?" you whispered softly.

"no" he said, tightening his arms around you.

you stayed there, holding him and letting him hold you in silence.

dabi was surprised, because you were awfully quiet. he was so used to hearing your voice all the time when he was around you.

yet, your silence was making him uneasy. he didn't like it one bit.

"did that bird brain try anything?" he asked, as he played with the ends of your hair.

he didn't get a verbal answer out of you, only a shake of your head.

"did something happen at work?"

another shake.

"did someone hurt you? just give me a name, and i'll take care of it"

another shake.

he didn't know what else to ask. he wasn't good at reading people— and he knew that if he kept on asking useless questions, you'd only shake your head no.

you placed a finger against his neck, gently pressing on the purple skin.

"does it hurt?"

his ears caught the smallest crack in your voice, and he immediately raised your head to look at you; only to be met with your tear stained face.

"what's wrong, princess?"

"it's nothing"

"but you're crying!"

"it'll pass"

"is it me? did i hurt you without realizing again?"

you never thought you'd hear him care that much. it was so out of character for him. yet, even kissing him used to feel wrong.

dabi didn't see you shaking your head to deny his question, so he tried to find where he messed up.

he couldn't smell anything burning, and he couldn't see a single burn on your body.

you went to open your mouth to reassure him that he didn't hurt you unintentionally again, yet, he was faster to speak;

"is it because of our situation? are you hurt because you can't understand what we are?"

"shit, i'll make you my girlfriend if it makes you stop crying!" he added, looking at you.

you were as shocked as him when you heard those words leave his mouth. you were stuck staring at him, unable to form any words for some minutes.

"are you serious?" you asked, a small smile on your face.

"no?"

"question mark?"

"i'm not your average boyfriend, angel. i don't know how to treat you right"

"i don't have any complaint, til now, though!"

"except for some times when you were too rough in bed" you added.

"now seriously? you want to be my girlfriend?"

"i wouldn't say no"

"even if i don't truly reciprocate your feelings?"

"you reciprocate some, so we're good" you said, before pecking his lips.

"so now that you stopped crying, will you tell—"

"call me girlfriend"

"no!"

"do it!"

"...girlfriend"

"one more time"

"no! one was enough!"

"tell me what's wrong!" he added, slightly squeezing your waist.

"jeez...! can't a girl just get sad on her parents' death anniversary?"
