Caspian's POV

Whoever said taking care of three children that aren't yours was easy is a liar. Genevieve tries to help, and she does sometimes, it's just that a five year old's version of helping isn't always what I actually need.

The twins do not want to sleep, no matter what I do. I don't know how Jackie and Ed did it. I'm starting to see why Jacqueline always had it out for Peter. The sleepless nights are making me on edge.

Only a week after the Pevensies left, I reached out to Sufak and Smumbleshy for advice. They knew how to take care of babies far better than I did.

They were actually able to get the boys to sleep.

"How did you do it?" I asked them. "Why can't you both be in charge of the babies? You know how to take care of them much better than I ever could."

"Well, the Queen asked you to take care of her children. She wouldn't have asked if she thought you couldn't do it," Smumbleshy told me.

"Queen Jacqueline is a great judge of character, so is her husband. They believed you could do it. That doesn't mean you have to do this alone. We're here to help you along the way," Sufak said.

"I don't know how good of a substitute parent I am when I barely get enough sleep to function properly," I vented.

"Well here's an idea, let's take into account who the children's parents are. Queen Jacqueline was queen of the mermaids and sea life. What's something important to mermaids?" Smumbleshy tried to prompt me to answer the question.

"I don't know, water?" I guessed tiredly.

"Well yes but that's not what I meant. I'm talking about music. Remember the stories of how mermaids channel their magic through song?"

"But I can't sing," I told them. "Their parents might have been able to, but if I tried I'm fairly certain they'd never stop crying."

"Music isn't just about singing," Sufak reasoned. "You have instruments in the castle, don't you? Surely you know how to play at least one of them."

I shook my head. "My uncle thought playing musical instruments was something for women to do to occupy their time when their husbands were away. Yes, I know, very misogynistic. But I never got to learn to play anything as a child."

"Well you have a castle full of resources, I'm sure you'll find someone to teach you something," Smumbleshy hinted before she and her brother left me to deal with the children on my own. The boys woke up shortly after they left.

Genevieve came in a few minutes later. "Are they still crying?" She asked. Her question was answered by her brothers tears and shrieks.

She went up to the crib that they laid in. We had managed to save it from the wreckage of the How after the battle and brought it here. Some craftsmen helped repair it to its original condition, giving the boys a small piece of their parents still with them. Genie began rocking the cradle back and forth soothingly while humming a song.
