The scream tore out of her before she was fully awake.

Irene bolted upright, hands flying to the swollen curve of her belly. The baby shifted inside her-heavy and alive.

"It can't be-it can't be-it can't be-"

Fragments slammed through her mind like broken glass.

Dacia.

Pregnant.

Another night.

Alma appeared.

The wet sound of a blade parting flesh. A newborn's thin wail. Blood. So much blood.

Then a figure was in the room with her.

She tried to move.

Her limbs refused. Terror locked every muscle as the shadow came closer, knife glinting.

"No...no-no!"

The first cut opened her from navel to sternum.

Pain exploded white-hot.

"Ahhhh!!!!"

She screamed until her voice cracked. A hands pushed from inside the wound.

The figure reached in and dragged the infant free in one slick, brutal pull.

The baby screamed.

Irene stared at the face above her and the world tilted.

Not Lady Alma.

Dacia.

Dacia's face, twisted into manic laughter, tears of blood tracking down her cheeks.

Irene woke with a violent jolt, sheets twisted around her legs, breath tearing in and out of her lungs.

"My lady-"

Libby was already there, gathering her close, arms tight around her shaking shoulders. Irene clutched at her stomach as if she could push the life inside it back into nothingness. Her eyes tremble in fear.

"Tell me it isn't true," she choked. "Libby-inside of me-please, say it isn't-"

Libby's face crumpled. She looked devastated, mouth working soundlessly for a moment before she simply held Irene tighter, rocking her the way one rocks a child.

Soft shushing sounds. Useless comfort. She could not bring herself to answer.

"Your Highness, please take a deep breath. Everything will be just fine."

"No," Irene kept whispering. "No... no..."

Irene pulled away from Libby as she sit back on the bed.

She looked lost, eyes unfocused, as if the dream still clung to the edges of the room.

The door opened.

Nickolai stepped inside and signal Libby out.

Libby stiffened, torn between duty and fear, then silently withdrew when his gaze flicked to her. The door clicked shut.

Irene did not notice him at first. She sat curled on the edge of the bed, arms wrapped around her middle, staring at nothing.

"Irene."

She flinched at that voice.

Her head lifted.

The moment her eyes found him she screamed-raw, furious-and launched herself at him.
