When Hanni returned, night had already fallen, and the aroma of dinner drifted. Mrs. Jung was in the kitchen, tidying up.
"Madam, you're back!" Mrs. Jung greeted Hanni with a warm smile.
"Yes." Hanni glanced around. "Is Minji back yet?"
"She'll be home soon," Mrs. Jung replied. "She called half an hour ago to ask if you had returned. I told her you were on your way, and she said she'd be back shortly, too."
Hanni nodded, feeling a small rush of anticipation.
"Was it a busy day for you, Madam?" Mrs. Jung asked casually.
"I visited the orphanage and spent time with some children," Hanni replied.
"It seems the boss didn't want to disturb you," Mrs. Jung noted with a smile.
"Why do you say that?" Hanni asked, puzzled.
"If she hadn't been worried about interrupting you, she could have just called you directly. She didn't need to check with me," Mrs. Jung explained, her pride evident in her clever reasoning.
Hanni's expression turned thoughtful. She didn't question whether Mrs. Jung's words were intentional, instead, a hint of guilt surfaced. They often acted like two people in love who hadn't yet taken that final step. Hanni hadn't given it much thought before, but now it seemed their dynamic was clear to those around them.
"Madam, I've already fed Choco. If there's nothing else, I'll be heading out," Mrs. Jung said.
"Of course," Hanni replied, a bit awkwardly.
After Mrs. Jung left, Hanni shrugged off her black coat and tossed it onto the sofa. She loosened her ponytail, letting her hair fall around her shoulders. This was the scene Minji walked into: a warmly lit home filled with the scent of a home-cooked meal and Hanni letting her hair down.
"Welcome back," Hanni greeted her wife.
"En." Minji patted Choco on the head before looking up. "You just got back?"
Minji must have known her wife was home, Mrs. Jung must have given her an update, but she still asked.
Hanni couldn't help but tease, "Didn't you already know?"
"Huh?" Minji stammered, momentarily caught off guard.
"Didn't you ask Mrs. Jung when I'd be back? She even joked that you must not have my phone number since you always ask her about me." Hanni's playful tone reflected the slight mischief in her words.
"I..." Minji was left momentarily speechless, exposed so directly. After a pause, she finally replied, "Then next time, I'll just call you directly?"
"Whatever you prefer." Hanni responded playfully before turning and heading into the dining room.
Does this mean she could call Hanni every day? With this thought, Minji happily gave Choco another round of vigorous rubbing and secretly decided to increase Mrs. Jung's salary.
"Let's eat," Hanni called out.
Minji immediately let go of Choco. She put away her briefcase, loosened her tie, and quickly walked to the dining room. She sat down, picked up her chopsticks, and was just about to take some food when her wife suddenly asked, "Have you washed your hands?"
Minji's chopsticks abruptly stopped. She had been so focused on Hanni that she had forgotten to wash them. But wouldn't she look foolish if she went to wash them now?
Hanni was highly amused at the foolish expression on Minji's face. "Forget it, I won't hold it against you just this once."
Won't hold it against you, won't hold it against you, won't hold it against you... Minji hunched down, extended her chopsticks, and picked up some vegetables to cover the smile on her face.
