DON'T shadow travel if you don't like the follwing things:
a) The dark.
b) Cold shivers up your spine.
c) Strange noises.
d) Going so fast you feel like your face is peeling off.
e) Your best friend behind you, clutching your waist for dear life while you ride a hellhound.Cassie could only feel Mrs. O'Leary's fur, her fingers wrapped around her dog collar, and Percy behind her.
The next minute the shadows melted into a new scene. They were on a cliff in the woods of somewhere in the United States.
Down one side of the cliff, a highway cut through a ravine. Down the other side was someone's backyard. The property was huge- more wilderness than lawn.
Mrs. O'Leary turned in a circle and flopped down so hard the ground shook, the shadow travelling probably tired her.
Nico appeared right next to them, as if the shadows had darkened and created him. He stumbled, but Cassie caught his arm.
"I'm okay," he managed, rubbing his eyes.
"How did you do that?" Percy asked.
"Practice. A few times running into walls. A few accidental trips to China." Before Cassie could say anything he answered. "No, nothing else happened."
Then Mrs. O'Leary started snoring, Cassie rubbed her ears. "She's out."
Nico nodded. "Mrs. O'Leary won't be going anywhere for a while."
"So we've got some quality time here." Percy gazed at the white Colonial house. "What now?"
"We ring the doorbell," Nico said.
If Cassie were Luke's mom, she wouldn't have opened her door at night for three strange kids. But she wasn't anything like Luke's mom.
The front porch was infested with wind chimes. Shiny bits of glass and metal clinked in the breeze, brass ribbons tinkled like water.
Cassie didn't know how Ms. Castellan could stand all the noise.
The front door was painted turquoise. The name CASTELLAN was written in English, and below in Greek.
Nico looked at the two. "Ready?"
He'd barely tapped the door when it swung open.
"Luke!" the old lady cried happily.
She looked like someone who enjoyed sticking her fingers in electrical sockets. Her white hair stuck out in tufts all over her head.
Her pink housedress was covered in scorch marks and smears of ash. When she smiled, her face looked unnaturally stretched, and the high voltage light in her eyes made Cassie wonder if she was blind.
"Oh, my dear boy!" She hugged Nico.
"Luke!" She forgot all about Nico and gave Percy a hug.
The she turned at Cassie, with her wide, crazed, eyes. "Is this your friend? Very pretty indeed." She said wistfully.
