I wanted to bring more attention to Wiress again, because dear god, why is she so underrated??!?!?!?!! Anyway, as always, I don't own the characters, Suzanne Collins does. If I owned THG, Wiress would be alive, and would have went home with Beetee at the end of the war. Anyway, happy reading loves!
It didn't really hurt when she died. Though she had never been friends with Gloss, she appreciates that he did not draw out her death. The night before the Quell, the Victors, except for Peeta and Katniss from 12, had agreed to avoid torturing each other. Any deaths would be as quick and painless as possible.
If anyone glanced at the wedding-dress clad Victor girl from 12, and her star-crossed, grief filled Victor fiancé to cement their decision, nobody commented.
Wiress was simply alive one minute and dead the next. She knew her throat had been slit. She knew that it would be a painful way to go, but she'd been so out of her mind, she'd hardly felt it.
It surprised her to see her own body, and to watch her hand go through Gloss's shoulder when she'd gasped and flailed at the first sight of it. But she'd adjusted quickly.
She watched Katniss turn and shoot Gloss in the chest. The cannon sounded as his body fell. She saw him, his ghost or whatever they were now, appear and look bewildered.
Cashmere screamed in outrage and attacked. Johanna's axe struck her chest, the cannon boomed and then she was there too.
Wiress nodded in acceptance of Gloss's soft apology, smiling to show there were no hard feelings. She didn't try to talk, she knew she'd struggled with it since entering the arena again, why bother with what she already knew?
Cashmere and Gloss followed their allies, Enobaria and Brutus as they fled, and Wiress was left with hers. She was surprised not to see Mags or Blight with them. Perhaps they'd left the arena and were busy watching over family, or in Mags' case, Annie Cresta, rather than their allies.
Whatever it was, Wiress didn't try to find them. Instead, she watched Beetee. As the island that held the Cornucopia began to spin, she watched Beetee get thrown onto his back, likely reopening his wound, based on how he'd grimaced, before eventually getting thrown off the island and into the water, along with Katniss and Finnick.
She watched as Beetee was helped onto the shore by Finnick, the elder Victor coughing and hacking up the water he'd inhaled.
"You alright?" Finnick asked quietly, watching as Johanna and Peeta emerge with Katniss in tail.
"That....depends on....your definition of alright." Beetee replied dryly, broken up by his coughs.
Finnick sighed and patted his back to help him cough up the remains of the water. Wiress winced at the sight of his shirt was slowly turning red again. Blood was seeping through from the jagged cut running down his back.
"Come on, we've gotta get to our camp again. And, you know, remake it." Finnick muttered, helping Beetee to his feet.
Wiress trailed after them, trying in vain to touch her partner's shoulder in comfort or his back to staunch the blood flow from his injury.
It failed every time, much to her disappointment. But it didn't stop her from trying.
She wasn't able to do anything as her allies went about attempting to break out of the arena. Katniss and Peeta remained oblivious to it, but she couldn't bring herself to care about that.
She just followed Beetee.
Wiress felt ill when she watched Peeta and Finnick both leave her still injured Beetee's side to go after the girls. She knew at once that Enobaria and Brutus had tampered with the wire, that one of them would be coming back to kill Beetee.
