You silently observed the vast horizon of the ocean before you, lost in thought. You had to admit, things hadn't turned out the way you expected back in that place.
But perhaps it was karma. You had played the game too long instead of ending things quickly.
A grin tugged at your lips, which you hid behind the back of your hand.
But you didn't hate the unexpected changes. You had met an interesting person-someone you wouldn't forget easily.
He'll become something someday.
"Oh, (Y/N)-chan!" A voice snapped you out of your thoughts, and you glanced over to see who had called you.
You looked at the young man with a slight tilt of your head, a cautious smile playing on your lips.
"Do I know you?" you asked politely.
The blonde teen grinned sheepishly, rubbing the back of his head. "You might not have noticed me, but we enlisted together... I mean, at the same time. You were so cool when you beat up Asai on enlistment day!"
You turned your attention fully to him, surprised by the enthusiastic praise. "Thank you, umm..."
"Oh, Samuel! You can call me Sam!" He bowed deeply, almost 90 degrees, making you a bit uncomfortable.
Too much.
You shifted slightly, trying to hide your discomfort as Sam straightened up from his overly enthusiastic bow. His eagerness was a bit overwhelming, but you couldn't help but find it endearing.
"Nice to meet you, Sam," you said, offering him a polite smile. "I'm glad you remember that day. It feels like a lifetime ago."
Sam's eyes lit up as he nodded eagerly. "Yeah, it was amazing! You really showed everyone that you're not someone to mess with. I've looked up to you ever since."
You chuckled softly, amused by his admiration. "Well, sometimes a girl has to do what's necessary."
He beamed at your response, clearly thrilled to be talking to you. "It's inspiring. I hope I can be as strong and confident as you someday."
As you observed the teen before you, you couldn't help but notice the contrast between his bright enthusiasm and Smoker's gruff demeanor. Yet, there was something about Sam that resonated with you. You looked directly into his eyes, a glint of appreciation reflecting in your gaze.
"They're better than me," you thought, your smile softening. "Too pure."
A thought suddenly crossed your mind. Why are you suddenly being surrounded by people like this? Is this the universe's way of telling you to stop being such a manipulative piece of shit?
