I hear a voice, it sounds angry, confused, frightened.
"Come on!" It sounds desperate, hanging onto a lifeline that has already been cut. But even so, it becomes easy to loosen myself from the darkness, and even more so to swim up, up, up, almost like I'm being pulled. I let myself fade into the light as it blinds me. I open my eyes to see familiar faces staring down at me. "I don't know what's left to try-"
"Wait! She's awake." I hear sighs of relief echo all around the room, and I can't help but feel confused. I sit up, but immediately regret it, as I feel throbbing in my head. I see Decker, Apollo, and Caspian? Staring down at me.
"What-why, h-how?" I stutter, Decker just hugs me instead.
"We thought we'd lost you." That makes me snort a laugh.
"Lost me?" From what, then it all comes flooding back, Nye. "I have to-" I say while lifting up the covers in the bed I'm sitting on.
"Oh no you don't!" Decker says putting the covers back on, I roll my eyes and look around the room instead.
It's one of the emergency rooms we have in the agency. I
'm sitting in one of the rolling beds, with needles stabbing into my wrist, the tubes lead up to various machines, I look away before my adrenaline fades and it starts to hurt. I'm caught off guard by someone lifting my chin.
Apollo.
"I was so worried." He says, hugging me. "When they called me-"
"Who called you?" I ask, pulling away. "Why are you here Apollo?"
"You listed me as your emergency contact, your boss." He says pointing at Decker, Decker winks at me. Very funny. I roll my eyes at him again.
"What were you so worried about? I'm fine." I say gesturing to myself.
"Kali," Caspian says, stepping out from behind Apollo. "You were in a coma for six days." He says even quieter.
"SIX DAYS!" I holler, I throw up my covers and launch myself out of bed, which I immediately regret when my legs feel like jelly, Apollo and Caspian lunge to catch me, they both grab an arm and help me up.
The rest me on the bed before the nurse comes and scolds me for almost tearing my needles out. She insists another day of rest and Decker complies.
"You're in a temporary state of shock, plus you haven't moved your legs in a week, those two together and you can't walk properly, or even stand up for that matter." The nurse says.
"Wait, Caspian, why are you here?"
"You spent a whole day saying his name." Decker says. "And I wondered if things would be different if he was here when you woke up, since you two have . . . baggage." Decker coughs, and Apollo decides that now would be the best time to have a staring contest with Caspian.
"Either way, I'm fine, they can both leave." Apollo takes his hand in mine.
"I know it must've been scary for you, and if there's anything you need, just call me."
"And you'll what? Deliver me a black coffee?" I laugh, Apollo grins but ultimately leaves in the end. "Did we catch the man at the crime scene?" I ask hopefully.
"He got away, I'm sorry Warner." Decker says, I just stare at the ground, but I find my eyes gravitating towards Caspians, his eye bags have returned and his usual twinkling eyes have been replaced with soulless voids.
"Caspian? Is there something you want to say?" I ask, he gestures at Decker, and I know that he can't say what's on his mind.
I'm also convinced he'll never trust me again, I can't imagine how betrayed I would feel waiting for hours, days, and then finding out the worst.
But I don't need to feel sympathy for this man, if he wanted to escape he said he could do it, so something or someone must have kept him here.
"I just wanted to make sure that you were feeling alright and that this incident didn't interfere with your," He pauses. "busy schedule." I nod my head, I know what you're trying to say Caspian, and I'll still help you escape, but in case you haven't noticed, now isn't the best time.
With closer inspection I see Caspian is wearing his ankle cuffs again, I wonder if anyone knows I took them off in the first place.
Decker turns his attention to the nurse, talking to her about if I need medication or anything else. Just then I notice something shiny in Caspian's hand.
The key.
He crouches down and swiftly removes the cuffs wrapped around his ankles. He shoves them under the covers of my bed before anyone sees, and I feel the cool metal with my feet. I smile, this man is clever, but still so stupid.
Caspian puts a finger to his lips, and I respond with a confused expression. He takes a step closer, then another step, and another.
