My face practically explodes. "I didn't assist him with the killing or anything like that, I just found people for him. Let me explain, I ran into him in highschool, I was a pretty reckless kid and had gotten myself involved in a whole world of people I wasn't ready for, he fed me sweet lies and gained my trust. When I was supposed to leave for college I moved in with him and his criminals." Caspian pauses. "He taught me how to bypass security things like that, basic hacking, and eventually I excelled at the skill."
Caspian lays down on the bed. "I knew that he murdered the people but he told me he was killing gang members, mafia leaders, that sort of thing. I found but I only found out he was killing agents like yourself when it was too late. He threw me out when I refused to find any more people for him. I was lucky he didn't kill me, so now I kill the bad guys, you know? The people like Malgrave, I'm not a criminal-"
"Hold on." I say quietly. "Why were you after me? You knew I was going to hurt Malgrave."
"That was a lie as well, I wanted to work with you, not take you in. Once I knew that you were tasked with the case I knew your skills had to be incredible. But if I told Decker that, or even you, I knew you wouldn't believe me. That's the real reason why I didn't harm you when you were drunk. I needed you alive." His tired eyes stare into mine, and I worry if he did any longer he might burn a hole right through them. "That's why it was laced with a sleeping elixir, I was never going to harm you, you were the one who tried to punch me first, that night at the club. Remember?"
"Yes." I say, breaking our eye contact and staring at my boots, Caspian's expression turns grim.
"Sorry for killing your mood again." He says with his trademark smile. Oh, I see, he can't handle his feelings either, so like me when he doesn't know what to do he just ignores them.
"Don't do that." I say under my breath.
"Do what?" Caspian looks at me innocently, eyes twitching with worry. I now see that there is more that goes on behind the scenes than what he lets me see.
"Hide your feelings." I respond.
"I'm not hiding anything Kali, I feel fine, promise. You can't really be talking though." I nod slowly, even though I want to punch him in the face. He swings his legs over the bed. Caspian pats a spot next to him and I don't have it in me to decline.
"I appreciate the information, and the honesty, so I'll hold up my end of the bargain." I step off the bed and crouch down by Caspian's shoes. I fit the key into the slot and turn it slowly, once I hear a click I pull the key out.
The cuffs fall on the cold stone floor with a loud bang. Caspian smiles a broken smile, I hand him the key. "This is in case they cuff you with anything again, this works on all of our cuffs."
"Thanks Kali."
"Anytime." I say back. "But I do have to be on my way, I'll see you in a few hours." I turn to leave when Caspian grabs a hold of my wrist.
"Be safe, okay."
"Yeah, man, don't worry, it's my fucking job" I say through a laugh before stepping outside. I shove the key into my pocket and step inside the elevator. I can't imagine it was easy for Caspian to admit all that, and I respect him for it.
But whether he knew it or not, he was still helping a man that killed countless people, and for that I won't forgive him.
When I make it up to Decker's office I can practically smell the sweat radiating off of him. He's pacing around the floor running his hand through his hair that shines as the sun peeks through the buildings.
