{ follow me through the dark }

With Cole gone, Valyria's guards were now Ser Martyn Reyne, Ser Leon Estermont, and Ser Ned Waters. Since Aegon was usually with her, they shared those three guards, and Valyria's handmaids followed her around every day. It was a full company, especially if they only planned on going from the Throne Room to the bedroom.

One of her handmaids, Gwyne, strayed behind as the queen's company walked up the stairs, and at the same time, Oletta did as well. Valyria was speaking with Aegon, who told her about the previous night, and she didn't notice her maid's behavior.

Oletta glanced back at the queen, then faced Gwyne. "Well? Are the preparations complete?" Gwyne nodded firmly, and lowered her voice, wary of of the people around them.

"Yes. Their Graces have a late-night council meeting, and His Grace will stall her. We should be all set up by the time she returns." Oletta smiled small, and Gwyne shared it. Hopefully, everything would go to plan.

"Girls!" They looked up at a sharp scold and saw an irritated Melara. They quickly followed, and Valyria glanced back with confusion before paying attention to Aegon, who had just gotten to Aemond's strange appearance.

"Aemond?" Valyria interjected, and he paused, unsure if he should continue or not. He didn't want to keep things from her, so he told her. And her reaction was...somewhat tame.

"Oh. I see." She hurried up the stairs, and he had to jog to keep up slightly. Aegon could tell she was upset, but he also knew that she didn't plan on saying anything about it.

Across the city, two other queens were engaged in what would say an interesting discussion.

One, dressed in green as a queen, looked at the other, who was dressed as a septa, so as to not draw suspicion. Truly, Alicent wondered how Rhaenyra managed to get into King's Landing without being recognized. But, it was entirely possible that the smallfolk had never seen her before, so how could they recognize her?

"Rhaenys has counseled me. She said she saw in you a wish to avert the worst of what may now come," Rhaenyra said but kept her voice hushed. Alicent still regarded her with a...wary expression, to say the least.

"So, you've come to surrender then?"

"I have come to see if we may uncover some path towards peace. My dragons are restless. They smell battle. But if you and I may come to terms..." Alicent shook her head swiftly.

"There are no terms now. You have no army, your allies turn from you when they hear of your depravity, your hands are bloodied in a crime I could never have imagined you..." Alicent looked away, but Rhaenyra spoke quickly, interrupting her.
