The air crackled with tension as the Battle of Hogwarts raged on around them, spells flashing through the air like bolts of lightning. Y/N fought valiantly, her heart pounding with fear and determination. Somewhere in the chaos, she knew Mattheo was fighting too, just like they had promised each other years ago.

They had been children then, not more than eight or nine, sitting beneath the oak tree in the meadow behind Y/N's house. The sun was warm, and the grass beneath them was soft. Mattheo, with his mischievous grin and messy hair, and turned to her in a serious expression.

"Let's make a pact," he said, his eyes locking onto hers. "If neither of us has married by the time we're grown, we'll marry each other. Deal?"

Y/N had laughed, but there was something sweet about the idea, a kind of safety in the thought of always having each other. So, she had agreed, linking her little finger with his.

"Deal."

Y/N's POV

The sounds of battle were deafening all around me–shouts, explosions, the crackle of spells flying through the air. My legs felt heavy as I pushed forward, my wand gripped tightly in my hand, heart racing with fear and determination. I had known that this day would come, so did Mattheo, but nothing could have prepared me for the chaos that surrounded us.

I barely had time to register the flash of green light before it struck me in the chest. The impact sent me crashing to the ground, the pain tearing through me like fire. My breath hitched as I tried to pull myself up, but my body refused to move.

Somewhere through the haze of pain, I heard something calling my name.

"Y/N!"

Mattheo.

His voice was desperate, almost broken, and the sound of it filled me with both relief and dread. He couldn't be here. He couldn't see me like this.

But suddenly, he was there, dropping to his knees beside me, his face pale and streaked with dirt and blood. His eyes widened in horror as he saw the state I was in. His hands pressed hard against my wound, but I could tell by the look in his eyes that he knew.

I wasn't going to make it.

"No," he breathed, shaking his head furiously. "No, you're not—no, Y/N. You can't do this. You have to stay with me.

I tried to speak, but all that came out was a soft gasp. My vision was beginning to blur, the world around me growing cold and distant. Still, I forced myself to focus on him–the boy I had loved for so long, but never had the chance to tell.

"We...we made a pact," he stammered, his voice cracking with desperation. "Remember? You promised we'd get married someday, if so one else came along. You promised."

I felt a weak smile tug at my lips, though it took everything I had to manage it. "I remember," I whispered. My chest felt tight, like every breath was a battle I was losing. "But...I can't keep that promise now."

"No," Mattheo said, his voice breaking. "Please...Y/N, I need you. Don't do this. Don't leave me. I...I love you. I always have. I should've told you sooner."

Tears burned in my eyes as I reached up, my trembling hand brushing his cheek. I wished so badly that we'd had more time. That we'd been able to live out the dreams we shared under that old oak tree all those years ago, when we were just kids. Back when the future seemed like something far away and full of hope.

"You'll move on," I said softly, forcing the words out, even though they felt like daggers in my heart. "You'll find someone else...someone who'll make you happy."

Mattheo shook his head, his tears falling freely now. "No one could ever take your place," he whispered, clutching me closer, as if holding me tighter could somehow keep me here with him.

I wanted to tell him that I believed him, but I didn't have the strength. Instead, I offered him the only comfort I could.

"You were my first love, Mattheo," I murmured. "Even if we never got the chance to...to really be together. I'll always be grateful for you."

His sobs grew louder, and he pressed his forehead to min. "Please," he whimpered. "Please don't go."

"I love you," I said, the words slipping out like a final release. "Don't forget that."

I could feel the darkness closing in now, wrapping itself around me, pulling me under. But before everything faded, I held onto the one last moment I could: Mattheo's arms around me, his love, the promise we made so long ago, echoing through my mind.

And then everything went still.
