The castle was eerily quiet as Y/N and Mattheo stood at the edge of the Astronomy Tower; the stars scattered above them like distant, unreachable dreams. The cold night air bit at their skin, but neither seemed to care. They stood close, their hands brushing against each other in a way that felt both accidental and intentional. Silence filled the space between them, but it was a silence heavy with unspoken words.
"You ever wonder how it'll all end?" Mattheo's voice was low, almost as if he didn't want the universe to hear his thoughts. His gaze was distant, staring out into the dark horizon.
Y/N glanced at him, surprised by the question. "What do you mean?"
He turned his head slightly, a crooked smile playing on his lips, though it didn't reach his eyes. "Life. Us. Everything. One day, it'll all just... stop."
She swallowed, the weight of his words setting in her chest. There was something in the way he said it, something that tugged at a part of her she rarely let herself feel. Vulnerability. "I try not to think about it."
"Why not?" His voice softened, almost wistful. "If the world were ending tomorrow, wouldn't you want to know? Wouldn't you want to make every moment count?"
Y/N's heart tightened. She knew what he was really asking. If they had only one night left, if this were truly the end, would she still hold back? Would she keep pretending that what they had—this strange, volatile connection—meant nothing?
She looked away, her breath fogging in the cool night air. "What would you do?" she whispered, her voice barely audible. "If this was the last night?"
Mattheo took a step closer, his hand finding hers, his fingers intertwining with hers in a way that felt both natural and terrifying. "I'd be right here," he said softly. "With you."
Her heart pounded in her chest, her mind racing with a thousand thoughts, but all she could focus on was the warmth of his hand in hers and the way his eyes softened when he looked at her. For once, there was no teasing smirk, no walls between them. Just him, raw and honest.
Y/N felt a lump rise in her throat, her chest tightening with emotions she couldn't name. There was a finality in his words, as if he was offering her something precious, something fragile, that could be gone in an instant.
"If the world was ending," he continued, his voice barely above a whisper, "I'd want to spend it with you, just for a little while, that would be good enough for me."
She turned to him, her heart in her throat, and in that moment, nothing else mattered. Not the past, not the future. Just them, here, now. And as Mattheo leaned in, his forehead against hers, Y/N realized that maybe, even if she never thought so, that she wanted that too.
She closed her eyes, letting herself fall into the moment, into him. "Me too," she whispered. "I'd want to be with you."
And in the silence that followed, as the stars shimmered above them, they both knew that no matter what came next, they had this—this fleeting, beautiful moment, and it was enough.
