Mattheo Riddle and Y/N had known each other for as long as they both could remember. They grew up side by side in the magical world, and when they got their Hogwarts letters, it was no surprise that they were sorted into the same house. From that point forward, they were inseparable, best friends through every challenge and triumph that Hogwarts had to offer.
They had a bond that everyone noticed. Their classmates and even the professors often commented on how well they fit together, how they looked like the perfect pair. "You two would make a beautiful couple," people would say with a knowing smile. Mattheo and Y/N would always roll their eyes at the suggestion, laugh it off as a joke, or even gag at the idea of them being a couple. It was weird to think about it—they were just best friends, after all. Nothing more.
But something started to change.
It began subtly for Mattheo. He'd find himself noticing things about Y/N that he hadn't before—like the way her laugh sounded like music to his ears or how her eyes sparkled whenever she talked about something she was passionate about. He felt a strange flutter in his chest whenever she smiled at him, and when she touched his arm or leaned against him casually, it sent a warmth through him that left him breathless.
At first, he tried to brush it off, telling himself it was just a phase or a result of spending too much time together. But as the months passed, the feeling only grew stronger. He found himself watching her across the Great Hall, wondering what it would be like to hold her hand, to kiss her. And that thought terrified him. What if these feelings ruined their friendship? What if she didn't feel the same?
Unbeknownst to him, Y/N had been struggling with her own feelings. For a long time, she had begun to see him differently too. It wasn't just the way his hair fell into his eyes or the way his smile lit up a room, it was how he made her feel safe, how he understood her better than anyone else in the world. She had fallen for him. Hard. But she kept it hidden, afraid that if she ever told him, it would change everything. She couldn't bear the thought of losing him or being rejected.
And so, they both kept quiet, dancing around their feelings, neither one brave enough to take the leap.
One evening, after a particularly stressful day of classes, the two of them found themselves walking along the edge of the Black Lake, the castle glowing softly in the distance. The air was crisp, and the sky was painted in the shades of purple and gold as the sun began to set.
"I don't know what I'd do without you," Mattheo said, his voice unusually soft as he glanced over at Y/N. There was something different in his tone, something she hadn't heard before.
Y/N smiled at him, feeling her heart race. "I think we're stuck with each other, Mattheo. You're my best friend."
He stopped walking then, turned to face her, his eyes searching hers. There was a flicker of uncertainty in his gaze, a vulnerability she wasn't used to seeing. "Is that all I am to you? Your best friend?"
Her breath caught in her throat, her heart pounding in her chest. She wasn't sure what he was asking—was this the moment she had always feared? Or was it something else?
"Mattheo, what are you—" she started, but he cut her off, stepping closer, his voice barely above a whisper.
"I can't keep pretending anymore, Y/N," he said, his hands trembling slightly as he reached out gently to take hers. "I've tried to ignore it, to push it down, but I can't. I'm in love with you. I don't know when it happened, but I look at you and now I can't imagine my life without you. Not just as my best friend—but as something more."
Y/N stared at him, her heart swelling with emotion. She had spent so long hiding her own feelings, convinced that he didn't feel the same. But now, hearing those words, she felt tears prick her eyes.
"I thought I was the only one," she whispered, her voice trembling. "I've loved you for so long, but I was afraid you didn't feel the same. I didn't want to ruin what we had."
Mattheo let out a shaky breath, a smile breaking across his face. "You're not the only one, Y/N. I was terrified too, but I can't keep pretending anymore."
In that moment, everything seemed to fall into place. All the years of friendship, all the moments they ever shared—it had all led to this. Without another word, Mattheo pulled her close, his lips meeting hers in a kiss that felt like it had been waiting to happen for years.
When they pulled away, a soft laugh escaped Y/N's lips. "All this time, we could've just told each other."
Mattheo chuckled, his arms wrapped around her. "Better late than never."
And as the sun set over Hogwarts, casting a golden glow over the lake, Mattheo and Y/N stood together, no longer just best friends, but something more. Something they both knew had been written in the stars all along.
