Y/N had always been the golden child. She carried her family's name like a crown, heavy but dazzling, and wore her achievements like an armor. Top of her class, head of every committee, and the shining star of every social gathering—she was everything her parents had molded her to be. But beneath the glimmer of her perfect facade, cracks had started to form, small fissures she buried deeper with each passing day.
Mattheo Riddle had noticed her long before she noticed him. He wasn't like the other students who flocked around her, dazzled by her brilliance. He watched from the shadows, studying the way her laughter never reached her eyes and how she seemed to shrink slightly after every praise. She was a star burning too bright, too fast. But he never said anything. He didn't do close. He didn't do feelings. He definitely didn't want to be connected to such a girl. His own life was messy enough without adding someone else's struggles to the mix.
And yet, he couldn't stop himself from watching.
It was cold, a windless night, when Mattheo caught her slipping out of the castle. She moved like a ghost, her figure barely visible in the moonlight as she made her way through the grounds. His curiosity tugged at him like an invisible thread, and he followed, careful to keep his distance.
She led him to the edge of the Forbidden Forest, then beyond it, climbing a narrow, winding path that cut through the mountains. He knew where it led—a jagged cliff overlooking both Hogwarts and Hogsmead, a place of solitude where few dared to go. Mattheo quickened his pace, the concern he had been ignoring clawing at his chest.
When he reached the top, he saw her standing at the edge, her silhouette framed by the vast expanse of the stars above. She was trembling, her fists clenched at her sides as if holding back something volcanic. He took a cautious step forward, but before he could speak, she screamed.
It was raw and unbridled, a sound that tore through the quiet night like thunder. Her voice cracked with the weight of emotions she kept buried for years—frustration, anger, sadness, and resentment all spilling out in a cascade of sound. She screamed again, tears streaming down her face, her breaths ragged and uneven.
Mattheo froze, his heart pounding. He had never seen Y/N in such a state. She was always composed, always perfect. But here, under the blanket of stars, she looked broken—beautifully, tragically broken.
When her screams turned into sobs, he moved closer, his shoes crunching softly against the fallen leaves. She didn't notice him at first, too lost in the whirlwind of her own despair.
"I didn't want this," she choked out, her voice barely audible. "I never wanted any of this. I'll never be good enough."
Mattheo's chest tightened at her words. "Y/N."
She spun around, startled, her tear-streaked face illuminated by the moonlight. "What are you doing here?" she demanded, her voice hoarse.
