Y/N stood at the edge of the Forbidden Forest, her wand clenched tightly in her hand. The air around her was thick with tension, the distant sounds of battle echoing across the Hogwarts grounds. She could feel her heart racing, not from fear of the fight ahead, but from the painful reality of what she was about to do.

Footsteps crunched against the leaves behind her. She didn't need to turn around to know who it was. The familiar presence sent a shiver down her spine, the way it always had, but now that feeling was tainted with betrayal.

"Y/N," Mattheo's voice was cold, guarded. He stood a few paces behind her, his dark eyes locked on her back, as though daring her to turn around and face him.

She inhaled sharply, forcing herself to stay composed. Slowly, she turned, her eyes meeting his. The Mattheo she had once known, the boy she had loved with all her heart, was gone. In his place stood someone else—a stranger, cold and unyielding. His dark curls were tousled, his expression hard, as if every part of him had been drained of the warmth she once adored.

"Mattheo," she greeted, her voice flat, though her heart screamed with emotion.

"I didn't think you'd actually betray us," he said, his tone laced with bitterness. His wand was in his hand, though not raised. "You're standing on the wrong side of this war, Y/N."

Y/N's chest tightened at his words. "Wrong side?" she echoed, incredulous. "You're the one who changed, Mattheo. You're the one who chose this path, this madness."

He scoffed, taking a step closer. "I didn't change, Y/N. I saw the truth. I chose power. I chose survival. You're just too blinded by your ideals to see it."

Her grip on her wand tightened, her knuckles turning white. "I didn't fall in love with a power-hungry tyrant," she shot back. "I fell in love with the boy who swore he'd never become his father's puppet."

Something flickered in his eyes at her words, a brief flash of the boy he used to be–the one she once knew. But it disappeared as quickly as it came, replaced by the cold, calculating gaze she had come to dread.

"Love won't save you," he said, his voice low. "Not in this world."

Y/N laughed bitterly, shaking her head. "And what will, Mattheo? Power? Fear? You think aligning yourself with your father will give you anything worth having? He's already taken everything away from you."

"Not everything," Mattheo snapped, his eyes flashing dangerously. "I still have control. I still have a future."

Y/N's heart ached at his words, at the way he had become so lost in the darkness that he could no longer see the light. She had tried to save him, to pull him back from the brink, but now she realized he had never wanted to be saved. He had chosen this path, and there was no going back.

"You're not the Mattheo I knew," she said quietly, her voice trembling. "The boy I loved wouldn't have done this. He wouldn't have turned back on everything good. He wouldn't have turned his back on me."

He took another step closer, his jaw clenched. "That boy is gone, Y/N."

She could feel the tears welling up in her eyes, but she blinked them back, refusing to let him see her break. Not now. Not after everything.

"I wish things could have been different," she whispered, her voice barely audible. "But I can't let you destroy everything. I won't."

Mattheo's expression darkened, and for a moment, they stood there in silence, the weight of their history pressing down on them. Then, without warning, he raised his wand, his eyes locking onto hers with a cold determination.

"Then you've made your choice," he said quietly.

Y/N's breath hitched, and she raised her wand in response, her hand slightly trembling. This was it–the moment she had to accept that the boy she had loved was truly gone.

"I have," she whispered, her voice cracking. "And I won't let you win."

Mattheo's lips twisted into a bitter smile, but there was something else behind those eyes. Regret? Pain? Whatever it was, it was fleeting, and before she could process it, he spoke.

"Neither will I."

In that moment, time seemed to slow as their wands clashed, sparks flying through the air. The force of the spells sent shockwaves around them, but neither of them backed down. Every strike was filled with the weight of their shared past, the memories of love that had once burned too brightly.

But now, all that were left were ashes.

Y/N fought with everything she had, but as the battle raged on, she could feel the weight of her emotions pulling her down. She didn't want to hurt him, didn't want to destroy what little was left of the Mattheo she had loved. But deep down she knew that she couldn't hold back.

With one final spell, the ground between them exploded, separating them in a cloud of dust and debris. Y/N stumbled back, panting, her heart pounding in her chest as the dust began to settle.

When she looked up, he was still standing, his wand lowered, his chest heaving with effort. His eyes, however, were filled with something she hadn't expected—sadness.

"I never wanted to come to this," he said softly.

Y/N swallowed hard, her throat tight with unshed tears. "Neither did I."

For a moment, they just stood there, staring at each other across the broken ground. Two lovers turned enemies, torn apart by the choice they had made.

And in that silence, Y/N looked at Mattheo, remembering all of the memories that they shared. Wondering what happened to the man that she once loved. She couldn't bring herself to end him so she did the only thing she could—walk away.

As she turned away, leaving him in the darkness, she could only hope that one day, he would realize the truth.

But by then, it would be too late and she would have to make a decision when it came to be.
