It wasn't a secret to the hermits that Mumbo was a vampire. In fact, it was the first thing they found out when they first met him. However, what the hermits didn't know was how Mumbo became one.

All the hermits had different ideas. One of the most common ideas was that Mumbo was born one. Meanwhile, the second most common one was he was turned by another vampire. And while the second idea wasn't correct about being turned, it wasn't entirely correct.

Mumbo had been walking through a swamp, on his way back to his base after a long day of mining.

As he walked he hoped he wasn't getting himself lost, especially since he hadn't expected to resurface many blocks away from his base. Let alone resurface in a swamp. Sure he knew he would end up at least some blocks away from his base as the caves could continue to lead to areas many blocks away from his base but not a thousand blocks like Mumbo had found himself to be.

Despite this fact, Mumbo wasn't complaining. In fact, he found it to be quite helpful. He was lying due for a break and being this far from home would give him it.

A couple of minutes had passed since Mumbo had surfaced before he decided to take a quick break from walking. While doing so, he pulled his communicator from his pocket and went to check how far away he was from his base.

He expected to be at least a hundred blocks closer, but instead it was the opposite. He was a hundred blocks further from his base. It didn't take seconds for Mumbo to notice that he was lost as he checked his coordinates. With that, the mustached man pocketed his communicator and  turned on his heel.

As Mumbo walked, he began to feel a pair of eyes lingering on him. At first he put it off as just some mobs. However, as he continued to walk, the feeling didn't leave him.

He was about to start running, feeling extremely on edge when a voice came from behind him.

"Are you lost, young man?" The voice questioned. It was slightly raspy and had a sense of something Mumbo couldn't quite put his finger in. A sinister intention perhaps. He wasn't quite sure.

"It seems I am" Mumbo replied as he stopped in his tracks and turned to the source of the voice.

Now standing in front of him was a woman. She wore a lime green dress paired with a purple knitted cardigan. Beneath it she wore a pair of black tights and a pair of dark grey boots. On her head sat a black witch hat with an emerald attached to it with a chain. Her face was covered in wrinkles and she had a wart on her crooked nose.

"Well I may be able to help you," the woman began, "if I remember correctly, I may have a may somewhere in my house and if not I'm sure I'll be able to brew you something to help you get home."

"That would be a great thank you" Mumbo smiled, despite it not being the most noticeable beneath his mustache.

"Follow me then I'll take you to my house so you can get on your way sooner" the woman said, with an unnerving smile.

Mumbo knew he probably shouldn't trust some random woman. However, at this point he was just desperate to get home. So, against his better judgement, he followed the woman to her house.

It wasn't long before they got to the woman's house. It wasn't much of a house though, it was more so a small hut. Although, Mumbo didn't question it. He just hoped that the woman did have a map and he could be on his way.

While he was deep in thought, the woman rummaged through a chest located in the corner of the hut.

It took a couple seconds, but eventually she pulled out a map. Along with the map, she also pulled out a potion she had brewed that morning. She didn't plan on just handing the map over to Mumbo without a cost. However, of course she had no plan to tell that to the mustached man.

"Here you are young man, this map should help you get home. And have this drink for your journey home" she said, breaking Mumbo from his thoughts and handing over the map and potion.

"Thank you for the help. Would you like anything in return?" Mumbo asked as he thanked the woman.

"No need to repay me the map is of no use to me. Now I would rush home if I were you the swamp can be a dangerous place. Many evil witches reside here, wouldn't want to come across one of them now would you?" The woman said with a chuckle and a slight sinister tone slipping into her words.

With one last thanks, Mumbo left and began his journey back home.

Thanks to the map, it didn't take him long. However, he was exhausted and went straight to bed forgetting about the brew that the woman had given him. Until the following morning that was.

He had woke up and went to get some breakfast, when he was reminded of it. He knew he probably should trust it but at the same time he was curious.

He spent minutes debating on whether or not he should drink the potion or not before ultimately he gave in to his curiosity.

He picked it up from where he had placed it the night before and downed it within a couple seconds. However, immediately he regretted it as the room began to spin before he ultimately passed out.

When he woke up, he could feel two sharp points pushing against his bottom lip. Not only that bust he began to feel the need to drink some blood.

At first Mumbo began to take note of his surroundings, before beginning to freak out. It took him a couple seconds to realise, but finally he worked out what happened.

The potion turned him.

Turned him into something he believed to just be a myth.

It had turned him into a vampire.
