The days following their quiet confession seemed brighter, lighter, as if a weight had been lifted from both of their hearts. The bond between Atsushi and Akutagawa had deepened in ways neither of them could have predicted. It was fragile, yes, still tinged with uncertainty, but it was theirs. And they were learning to navigate it together.
Atsushi's memories hadn't fully returned, though there were flashes here and there, small glimpses of moments, emotions, and fragments of the life he had forgotten. But what mattered more to him now was the life he was building in the present. A life with Akutagawa.
The two of them had settled into an easy rhythm. They trained together during the day, their sessions still intense but now laced with a newfound understanding. They no longer fought as rivals, but as partners, sparring to grow stronger together, to protect one another. And in the evenings, they spent quiet moments together, talking about nothing and everything, enjoying each other's company in a way that felt... comfortable. Natural.
One evening, as they sat on the rooftop of their now shared apartment, the city lights flickering like stars beneath them, Atsushi found himself lost in thought. He gazed at the skyline, his mind drifting to the fragments of memories that had started to resurface. They were still incomplete, still frustratingly unclear, but something had shifted in him. He no longer felt the same fear about what he didn't remember. Instead, there was a growing sense of peace.
Akutagawa, sitting beside him, glanced over, his sharp eyes taking in Atsushi's contemplative expression. He hadn't said much, but he could sense the subtle change in Atsushi's demeanor. He had grown more thoughtful lately, more introspective, and Akutagawa could feel that something was on his mind.
"Do you... ever wonder about the future?" Atsushi asked suddenly, breaking the comfortable silence. His voice was soft, almost hesitant, as if he wasn't sure he wanted to ask the question.
Akutagawa raised an eyebrow, his gaze steady on Atsushi's face. "The future?"
Atsushi nodded, his eyes still fixed on the skyline. "Yeah. I mean... what happens next? What happens if I never get all of my memories back? What happens if I do? I don't know how things will change, but..." He hesitated, his voice growing quieter. "I don't want to lose what we have now."
Akutagawa's chest tightened at Atsushi's words. He hadn't allowed himself to dwell too much on the future, he had always been someone who focused on survival, on the next mission, the next battle. But now, with Atsushi beside him, the idea of a future had started to take root in his mind. A future where the two of them could build something beyond their past struggles.
"You won't lose it," Akutagawa said quietly, his voice surprisingly gentle. "Even if your memories come back, even if things change, that doesn't mean we lose what we have now."
Atsushi finally turned to look at him, his eyes searching Akutagawa's face. "But what if I'm different? What if... the old me comes back and things go back to how they were? What if I push you away?"
Akutagawa's gaze softened, and he reached out, placing a hand on Atsushi's arm. His touch was steady, grounding, and it sent a wave of warmth through Atsushi's chest.
"You won't," Akutagawa said firmly. "We've already come too far for that."
Atsushi felt his heart swell at Akutagawa's certainty. He didn't know how to explain it, but something about Akutagawa's presence, his unwavering belief, gave him a sense of security he hadn't realized he needed.
