The bedroom was quiet, illuminated only by the soft moonlight of the moon that seeped through the curtains in the room. Dazai laid beside Chuuya, their bodies comfortably tangled together underneath the sheets. The steady rhythm of Chuuya's beating heartbeat had lulled Dazai to sleep earlier that night, a rare sense of peace enveloping him as he rested beside the person he loved. But peace rarely lasted long in Dazai's world.
In the depths of his sleeping state, nightmares clawed at him. He saw Odasaku, his best friend, lying motionless, blood pooling all around him. Dazai's hands were stained with red blood, but no matter how hard he tried to save him, Odasaku was always slipping away from his grasp. Then the nightmare suddenly shifted, and Chuuya was before him, his body glowing with the deadly power of Corruption. Dazai ran towards him, his heart pounding as Chuuya spiraled further and further into destruction. He was screaming in pain, calling for Dazai to save him. But Dazai was too late. The moment his hand reached out, the brightness of Corruption swallowed Chuuya whole, leaving nothing but emptiness behind, as Dazai sunk to his knees he held his head in his hands and screamed out in pain.
Dazai soon jolted awake, his heart racing in his chest, his chest heaving as he struggled to catch his breath. His skin was cold with sweat, and his mind raced with the vivid images of his nightmare.
"Dazai?" Chuuya's voice was groggy, concerned. He stirred beside him, feeling the shift in Dazai's body, immediately aware that something was wrong. "Dazai, What's wrong?"
Dazai didn't answer Chuuya at first, his eyes still wide and haunted, as if the nightmare had left a permanent mark on him. His fingers gripped the sheets tightly, making his knuckles white as snow.
Chuuya shifted closer to Dazai, his warmth grounding Dazai, pulling him out of the haze. "Oi, Dazai. What happened?"
"It was a nightmare... just a terrible nightmare," Dazai finally muttered, his voice hoarse, barely above a whisper. He felt Chuuya's hand on his hand, a gentle touch that tethered him to reality. "I saw Odasaku... and you. You were... I couldn't save you. I was too late."
Chuuya's eyes softened as he realized the weight of Dazai's words. He knew about Odasaku, knew how much that loss haunted Dazai. But to see Dazai trembling now, vulnerable in a way he rarely allowed himself to be, twisted something in Chuuya's chest.
"Hey," Chuuya said softly, pulling Dazai towards him. He wrapped his arms around him, his grip firm and steady. "It was just a nightmare. I'm right here, and I'm safe."
Dazai leaned into Chuuya's embrace, his head resting against Chuuya's shoulder, feeling the steady rise and fall of his chest as his heart beated. The warmth of Chuuya's body slowly chased away the remnants of the nightmare, grounding Dazai in the present, reminding him that Chuuya was alive, and right here next to him.
"I won't let anything happen to you," Dazai whispered, his voice fragile as if he was trying to convince himself as much as he was reassuring Chuuya.
Chuuya held him tighter, his lips brushing against Dazai's temple. "I know. And I trust you. You've saved me before, and I know you'll save me again if it comes to that. But for now, I'm fine. We're fine."
Dazai closed his eyes, allowing himself to relax fully in Chuuya's warm embrace. Chuuya's heartbeat was steady, a rhythm that soothed Dazai's frayed nerves. He felt safe, something he rarely allowed himself to feel.
"Can we stay like this,? Please?" Dazai murmured, his voice quieter now, as the tension drained from his body.
Chuuya pressed a kiss to the top of Dazai's head, his hands running through Dazai's hair in a comforting gesture. "Of course, I'm not going anywhere. I've got you."
