Over the following months, Dream and Lani's fondness for one another grew (like they weren't already smitten in the first place). It frustrated Lani that, despite their chemistry, they never defined their relationship. She enjoyed the playful dynamic, but Dream's constant jokes about dating in the near future both annoyed her and sparked a flicker of hope.

He often promised to buy her a ticket to Florida, and she would always teasingly reply, "one-way ticket?" to which he'd confidently say yes. Given her love for travel, it wouldn't take much to convince her; Florida was just a short five-hour trip through a few states, and her almost boyfriend and close friends lived there— so someone could offer her a ticket to Orlando and she'd accept it without a second thought.

For Dream, he admits he's a little envious of their mutual friends, they could meet up with her anytime they wanted to (it won't take long before half of their friends meet up with her before him, he assumes).

But to protect himself and his privacy, phone calls and texts were the next best thing. Each message felt like a reminder that she was still close, even if she wasn't physically present.
