A day had passed since TwitchCon ended.
The four of them sat together on a subway, heading to New York City. Lani had let them stay at her home—on the condition that they promised not to lose, burn, or accidentally destroy any of her belongings, or injure themselves in the process.
Lani and Clay sat side by side on the two connected seats, while Sapnap and George occupied the ones facing them. George had his headphones in, sound asleep, his head tilted slightly against the window. Sapnap was quietly munching on the leftover takeout they'd grabbed before boarding the train.
Dream, ever the Twitter lurker, was scrolling through his timeline. Lani, on the other hand, wasn't doing much of anything—just idly picking at her chipping nail polish, lost in thought as the subway car rattled.
"You're quiet," Dream said, turning off his phone. Lani side-eyed him, furrowing her brows with a mock disgusted look.
"I don't have anything to say."
"Do you want to talk then?" he asked. Lani hummed a quiet yes. "Did you have fun at TwitchCon? At the party? We didn't really talk then, so I figured I'd—"
"Yeah," she cut him off quickly, knowing if she didn't, he'd launch into an explanation about why they didn't talk much, apologize repeatedly, get sidetracked, and you know the rest.
"Okay, that's... good. Me too," Dream said, his hands resting on his lap, fidgeting slightly. "Did you meet anyone new?"
"I guess so, but at the same time, not really. I mostly just stuck around with Tina and Gia. It was fun, though," she said with a small smile. "What about you? Did you meet anyone new?"
"Yeah, a fuckload of people. It was... overwhelming," Dream chuckled softly. "I even had to hide in the bathroom once during the convention because there were, like, 50 people swarming me."
She giggled. Somehow, that was the most Dream thing ever. "Well, obviously there'd be a crowd. You're Dream. Being famous comes with shit like that."
"Oh yeah?" he teased, smirking. "You must know a lot about it, huh? Famous singer."
She rolled her eyes playfully. "I actually only started getting kinda famous when... well, when we became friends."
"Oh my God, you're a clout chaser, aren't you? I don't doubt you're a gold digger too," Dream said dramatically, his expression one of exaggerated glumness.
Lani rolled her eyes again. "Rude as fuck. Also," she started, her tone shifting to teasing as she nudged him with her elbow, "I saw you at the party. With a girl. You two hit it off?"
Since the topic was already close, why not ask? She decided. The sudden mention made Dream's cheeks flush, not out of fluster, but more from embarrassment. "Well, um, I think so. We talked, and she asked for my number. But nothing else happened."
"Yeah? Nick called her hot. But he was drunk, so," she shrugged. Talking about the girl made Lani hate her a little bit. Though she knew she had no reason to, she doesn't know the girl yet.
"She's pretty, yeah," Dream admitted, his tone casual.
Lani nodded, biting the skin on her lips for a moment before speaking again. "Do you like her?" That was the million dollar question.
"I like you," Dream said, almost as if reassuring her. "I don't know her that well to like her. I think she likes me, though..." he added, his voice tinged with a hint of awkwardness.
"Oh," was all Lani responded with, her mind racing for something else to say. "Well, if you do end up liking her, you don't have to worry. I don't care if you do," she reassured him.
"Are you jealous?" Dream asked, his eyes widening slightly before a grin tugged at his lips. "Don't be jealous, I'm all yours."
Lani scoffed playfully, rolling her eyes. "I'm serious though, it doesn't matter. It's not like we're dating or anything."
Dream shrugged and nodded, before Lani spoke again. "Can I at least know her name?" she asked, her tone carrying an undertone of eagerness.
"Thea, she streams too. But she's a smaller streamer. She said she mainly does Stardew," Dream said, pausing as he tried to remember more. "She said she'd like to get to know me better, if I was okay with that."
"Really? What'd you say?" Lani asked, her gaze focused on him.
"I didn't say anything," he replied quietly.
"Wow. Staying inside for so long must've caused you to lose the ability to talk to any girls in person," Lani said, crossing her arms and giving him a jokingly unimpressed look. "You are bitchless. You can't pull to save your life."
"You like me though?"
"That doesn't count. We aren't together." She countered.
