The first few days with the three men staying at her home were lively and fun. Sapnap and George teased her in a brotherly way, while Dream, who always managed to make her feel just a little bit better without even trying. He had this way of making everything feel a little lighter, a little easier, just by being there.
There was something about the way he moved around her home, comfortable yet considerate, that made her notice him even more. Whether it was helping her with small tasks, cracking jokes, or the quiet moments when they'd just sit and talk in the living room, her head on his shoulder while his atop of her own as they held her cats—it felt natural. Maybe a little too natural.
Yet, they never officially defined what they were. Neither had the balls to bring it up, so they just stayed as they were—caught somewhere between friends and something else.
Dream sat at one end of the couch, Lani at the other. She glanced over at him occasionally. He was quiet, which wasn't unusual, but he'd been focused on his phone for a while, consistently typing.
She tried not to dwell on it, but the curiosity was eating her from the inside out. Her logical side reminded her it was probably something about his merch, Minecraft, or whatever it is Dream usually texts about.
She stood up and walked toward the kitchen, glancing over his shoulder for a brief moment, just trying to see what he was texting—casually, of course—not in an obsessive, creepy way.
She stood for a second too long, and Dream glanced up at her, quickly pressing his phone to his chest. "Are you spying on me?"
"I'm offended you'd even assume such a thing, Clay."
"Don't be an idiot, Keilani."
"I'm literally going to get food from the kitchen," The shorter steps back, as if to prove her point.
"No you're not, you're spying on me like a weirdo."
Lani crosses her arms. "If anyone's a weirdo, it's you for being so secretive for no reason."
"I'm not being secretive." He countered.
"You so are. Probably texting your online girlfriend, 'cause you're like those e-daters and shit," she said in a matter-of-fact voice, maintaining a completely straight face.
"That's none of your business."
"It is though," she continued, her tone light but firm. "I'm your friend. We should know what we text other people. That's how it should work." She crossed her arms, raising an eyebrow as if waiting for him to crack. "Plus, I'm curious. Who were you texting all this time, huh?"
Dream chuckled, shifting his leg to keep the phone out of her reach. "It's classified. Not for your eyes, sorry." He pushes her arm, enjoying the slight banter.
"Are you sexting someone or something? Oh my God, you freak." Lani gasps dramatically.
"I'm not! That's– that's gross!" Dream exclaims, sounding genuinely shocked that she'd even suggest that.
