NOVEMBER 15 .

Lani blinked drowsily as sunlight streamed into her room like a gentle tide. Her phone rested beside her. She must have fallen asleep while talking to Dream again. Honestly, long-distance relationships were shitty.

Today was her birthday, and the night before, she had called her boyfriend, venting about how the age she was turning this year felt a little too serious for her liking

Referring to Dream as her boyfriend still felt foreign to her tongue, even after a few months. It was surreal in a way, but she wouldn't trade it for anything.

She picks her phone up, bombarded by birthday greetings from relatives and friends. She wasn't the biggest birthday lover, but she appreciated the messages nonetheless. Scrolling through them absentmindedly, her eyes landed on one in particular.

happy birthday baby!

Her heart skipped a beat. She scrambled out of bed, barely taking a second to throw on a new shirt before making her way to the door.

When she opened it, a package sat neatly on the welcome mat. It was wrapped in brown paper, with her name scrawled on a gift tag in Dream's familiar handwriting. Kneeling down, she picked it up and carried it back inside, shutting the door behind her.

Carefully unwrapping it, she found a hoodie—his hoodie. One she'd wore a few times before but had to return. Along with it was a small note tucked inside.

"Figured you'd like something of mine to keep. Smells like me, so you better wear it every day or I'm taking it back. Happy birthday, I love you."

Lani smiled, holding the fabric to her chest as warmth bloomed in her stomach. Maybe birthdays weren't so bad after all.

Beneath it all, she discovered even more. CDs of her favorite albums, a small but undeniably expensive-looking jewelry box, books by her favorite authors, and at the very bottom, a neatly folded letter sealed with a heart-shaped sticker.

Her breath hitched as she took everything in. Dream had always been thoughtful, but this—this was something else.

Carefully, she picked up the letter, running her thumb over the heart-shaped sticker before peeling it open. The paper was thick, the handwriting slightly slanted but undeniably his.

My dearest, Lani,

Happy birthday! I know you're not big on birthdays, but I couldn't let today pass without making sure you knew just how much I love you. So, here's a bunch of things that remind me of you, or things I know you love. Hopefully, every time you see them, you'll think of me too (as if I'm not already living rent-free in your head).

To be frank, I wasn't sure what to get you at first. It was either a plane ticket for you to come here or a plane ticket for me to go there. But unfortunately, I was cursed with a busy schedule during your birth week. I'm sorry, I really do want to spend your birthday with you. But I hope these will suffice for now.
