Dream came home later than he'd promised. By then, Lani and the others had already eaten, assuming he'd decided to have dinner with Thea instead.
She heard the front door click shut and looked up from her phone. There he was, standing in all his usual presence, a small but noticeable smile on his face—though he still looked exhausted.
"Hey," she greeted.
"Hey," he sighed, dropping onto the couch beside her. "I'm uh, I'm sorry I got home late. She never stopped talking and shit. Did you guys already eat?"
"Yeah, we just ordered Chinese food."
Lani fidgeted for a moment before finally asking the question that had been nagging at her all night.
"Did you have fun?" She hummed, sounding indifferent.
"Um... yeah. It was fun," he said, though his tone lacked conviction.
"You don't sound like you had much fun."
"She asked me if I wanted to go home with her," Dream admitted sheepishly. "Then it got awkward. I said no, obviously. Um... I dunno, she was nice."
"You like her?"
"Yeah, sure."
Lani wasn't exactly sure what that meant. His tone wasn't screaming Yeah, I totally like her! but it also wasn't No, the date was dogshit. Never again.
Still, it was confirmation—however slight—that he did like her.
