AUGUST 12 .

It was Clay's birthday today—a big deal to most people, but not so much for him. The excitement didn't hit the same knowing Lani couldn't be there. Sure, she had called him first thing in the morning, laughing as she sang him a chaotic rendition of "Happy Birthday" but it wasn't the same as having her by his side.

"Don't be such a baby about it," she'd teased on the phone earlier. "I'll make it up to you, I promise."

But he still felt the emptiness of her absence.

Dream tried his best not to let his nerves show. After all, they were guests, and he didn't want to come off as anything but welcoming.

It was... nice, he decided. The house, which usually felt a little too quiet and empty for his taste, was suddenly alive with laughter, conversations, and the clinking of cutlery. It was a kind of chaos that felt oddly comforting.

He liked having people over, it brought a warmth to the space that he hadn't realized he missed. Even if it was a bit overwhelming, it felt cathartic in its own way.

He stood in the center of the room, surrounded by a sea of familiar faces, all laughing and chatting as they celebrated him. Their voices blended into a hum of joy and excitement, but it all felt distant, like he was watching it from behind a glass wall.

Everyone was here for him, yet he couldn't shake the heaviness in his chest. He smiled and nodded when someone came up to talk to him, but the warmth of their words barely reached him.

In a room full of people, he felt alone.

Why was he like this? Was it a mid-life crisis, even though he was far too young for one? Or maybe it was the exhaustion creeping in, the kind that doesn't come from lack of sleep but from the weight of everything he carried.

Or was it simpler than that?

Did he miss Lani?

(He probably did. No, he most definitely did.)

He hadn't noticed he had zoned out until Sam came up to him, slinging an arm around his shoulder with a broad grin.

"Dream! What's up, man? You okay?" Sam asked, his voice cheerful, though his brow furrowed slightly when he noticed Dream's distant expression.

Dream blinked, forcing himself to snap out of it and plaster on a smile. "Yeah, yeah, I'm good," he said, trying to sound convincing.

Sam raised a brow but didn't press further, giving him a friendly shake. "Alright, well, stop sulking in the corner and come hang out with us. Everyone's here for you."

Dream chuckled faintly, following Sam as he led him back to the group. But even as he tried to engage in the conversation and laugh at their jokes, part of him still felt like he wasn't really there. Like he was just going through the motions.
