Do nothing from selfish ambition or conceit, but in humility count others more significant than yourselves.

Philippians 2:3 (ESV)

What motivates us is important. Are we motivated by selfish ambition or conceit? Or in humility do we count others more significant than ourselves?

Our default is to be selfishly ambitious and conceited. Only by the grace of God can we successfully override such an attitude. He can humble us where necessary.

Our attitude should be the same as that of Christ Jesus. He models humility for us. He even endured the humiliation of the cross for our sakes.

It's highly unlikely we'll be crucified for our faith in Jesus, although under the likes of Islamic State, such an outcome wasn't inconceivable. Yet Jesus commands us to deny ourselves, to metaphorically take up our crosses, and to follow Him.

'Our Father in heaven, please help us to be Christlike in humility. In His name we pray, amen'
