Chapter 22

Maddie

I was walking home but I was alone, it was late at night and also dark. One of the street lights kept flickering until it completely blew out. I knew I was alone since Ben wasn't with me and neither was anyone else but I didn't feel like I was alone, I got this feeling that there was someone else there. I stopped walking and took a moment to look around, there was no one else to be seen anywhere. I turned around and continued my walk back home, the road just seemed to stretch out for miles, it kind of felt like I was walking on a treadmill, not getting anywhere. 

As I continued walking, it was like chills suddenly ran down my spine and I shuddered, getting the feeling of having eyes on me again. Suddenly something flew right by me so quickly, I fell to the side, when I looked up there was nothing there, I wasn't sure if it was a fast car or something else. I groaned as I sat up and rubbed my legs, I was about to get up when a sudden noise caught my attention. I looked around before my eyes settled on a dark bush which was also surrounded by tall trees in front of me. I strained my eyes, trying to look to see if I could see anything when suddenly two yellow glowing eyes appeared out of nowhere. 

I jumped awake.

"Maddie" Jack said as he was gently trying to wake me up

I took a moment and looked at Jack and around his room. 

"Hey, you okay?" Jack asked, the concern clear in his voice

"Yeah fine, just a weird dream" I smiled as I slowly sat up

"Wanna talk about it?" Jack asked carefully, his hand still on my back

"No, I'll be okay, I don't even remember much about it anyway" I smiled

"I'm sorry to wake you up so early but I may have another surprise planned for you" Jack smiled

I looked at the alarm clock on Jack's bedside table to see that it read 06:00 am. 

"Another surprise at this time of the morning?" I asked confused

"Yeah but this time it's just us two and it involves some travelling" Jack smiled as he explained

"Travelling? To where?" I asked

"It's a surprise, you'll see when we get there" Jack replied

He knows I hate it when he mentions a surprise but then doesn't tell me anything else or let much about it out. 

"Do I need to pack another overnight bag?" I asked 

"Your gonna need clothes and nightwear for a few days and nights" Jack informed me as he began to pack his stuff into a bag. 

I got up and quickly did the same, packing my own clothes, nightwear, toiletries and anything else I may need for this surprise. Once we were both packed, we walked out to Jack's car, put our bags in the boot. Jack helped me get in the passenger's side before he walked around and got in the drivers seat. 

"Ready?" Jack asked as he turned to me while he started his car up

"Sure but I'm not sure what it is that I'm meant to be ready for" I replied 

"You'll soon see" Jack smiled

Jack drove for quite a while, along roads I never even knew existed. The route we took wasn't familiar with me at all. I did start to feel tired during the drive and thought about letting myself just drift off to sleep but the memories of the nightmare I'd had the previous night, came flooding back to me and I was scared in case I had another one or a worse one and it distracted Jack whilst he was driving so I just forced myself to stay awake by looking out the window and talking to Jack.
