We pull up to the venue, and I step out, walking around to open the door for her. She takes my hand as she gets out, but I can tell her mind is already somewhere else. She's barely glanced at the building, let alone shown any interest in the party.
I toss the car keys to the valet and fall into step beside her as we head inside. She hasn't said a word, but I can feel her restlessness-the way her hand tightens on mine, the way her gaze flickers around, not really seeing anything. I glance at her.
"What are you thinking, Storm?"Her head jerks up, her expression caught between surprise and something else.
"How do you always know?" she asks, staring at me like it's some kind of magic.
I smile, the moonlight catching her features just enough to make her look ethereal.
"I can hear the gears of your mind moving," I tease. "Now, come on, tell me. What are you thinking?"
"Meemaw," she says, her voice soft but sure.
"We're just an hour away from her." Her hand still gripping my arm .
"Oh yeah?" I say. "Then why don't you go meet her?"
"I want to so badly," she admits, her eagerness almost contagious.
"Then go-after this stupid party," I suggest. Her eyes light up. "Can I?"
"Of course."
She remains quiet for a while. "You want to come with me?" she blurts.
"Wait, no, that's crazy. I'm sorry-that sounded weird."
I cut her off to stop her rambling. "Of course, I'd love to."
She looks at me through those big green eyes. "You're serious?"
"Of course."
"You don't think that's weird?"
"Why would I? If you want me there, I'll be there," I shrug.
She smiles, but not the fake kind-it's the kind of smile that made me fall for her.
"Your smile's beautiful, Ivy. Never doubt that." A soft blush creeps onto her cheeks.
"Come on, let's just get this over with," she says, tugging at the sleeve of my coat.

It's been fifteen minutes into the party, and she's glaring at everyone and anyone. Her face is blank as paper, but one of her eyebrows is raised, indicating she's reading everyone like an open book.
"What are you looking at?"
"As much as I hate these parties, they're quite useful. At parties like these, you get to know exactly who to avoid."
"Like?"
She tilts her head slightly, her gaze locking with mine. She smirks.
"Like him,the assistant director " she says, nodding toward a guy dressed in a suit just a bit too flashy for the occasion. He laughs a little too loud, his eyes darting between groups of people like he's looking for his next victim.
