As the mechanical bird took flight, winging its way back to its master with news of the latest developments, Mer-mer and Shadow-cat exchanged grim looks in the moonlight.
"We're running out of time," Shadow-cat said urgently. "If Solaris and Batiatus are both scheming to use us for their own ends, we need to act fast. The upcoming games may be our only chance."
Mer-mer nodded, his mind racing. "Alright. We continue our training, build alliances where we can, and keep our ears open for any more information about the Time Compass or this prophecy we seem to be tangled up in. When the festival comes, we make our move."
"And hope that luck is on our side," Shadow-cat added wryly. "We're going to need every scrap of skill and wit to survive what's coming."
As they slipped back to their cell, careful to avoid the night watch, Mer-mer couldn't shake the feeling that unseen forces were moving against them. Powerful entities battling for control of arcane artifacts and the very flow of time itself. How had two simple travelers become so enmeshed in such dangerous affairs?
...
In the days that followed, Mer-mer and Shadow-cat threw themselves into their training with renewed intensity. They pushed their bodies to the limit, honing their combat skills and studying the tactics of their fellow gladiators.
All the while, they kept a wary eye out for any sign of treachery or hidden agendas. As the Emperor's festival drew near, the entire ludus buzzed with anticipation. Whispers of the upcoming escape attempt grew more frequent, though details remained scarce.
Mer-mer and Shadow-cat did their best to appear uninvolved while quietly gathering what information they could. Then, on the eve of the festival, an unexpected opportunity presented itself. As they retired to their cell for the night, Shadow-cat noticed the mechanical bird that had been spying on them was behaving erratically, its movements jerky and uncoordinated.
"Look," she whispered urgently, pointing at the malfunctioning automaton. "Something's wrong with it. This might be our chance to examine it more closely, maybe even disable it."
With a quick glance to ensure they weren't observed, Shadow-cat leaped up and snatched the bird from its perch. Up close, they could see intricate gears and mechanisms through gaps in its metallic feathers. A small, pulsing crystal was embedded in its chest, evidently the power source. Mer-mer watched nervously as Shadow-cat produced a small tool from her hidden stash and began to carefully tinker with the bird's workings.
"Do you think you can deactivate it?"
"I'm not sure," she murmured, her brow furrowed in concentration. "This is technology far beyond anything I've seen. But if I can just disrupt the energy flow from this crystal..."
Suddenly, the bird convulsed in her paws, its eyes flickering wildly. Shadow-cat hissed in surprise and dropped it. The automaton flapped clumsily, sparks emitting from its joints, before crashing to the floor in a twitching heap.
For a moment, the two cats stared at the downed bird, hardly daring to breathe. Then, slowly, a wisp of green smoke began to rise from its beak, coalescing into a shimmering image - the face of a wizened old cat, his eyes glowing with arcane power.
"Greetings, wayward travelers," the apparition spoke, its voice echoing strangely.
"I am Solaris, master of the currents of time. I have been watching you with great interest."
Mer-mer and Shadow-cat exchanged shocked glances. The sorcerer who had orchestrated their predicament was now directly addressing them."I know you seek the Time Compass," Solaris continued. "And I know of your growing reputation in the arena. But be warned - the path ahead is fraught with peril. Succeed in your trials, and you may yet earn an audience with me.
