The mechanical sentinels moved with chilling precision, their gears whirring and clanking as they swept the area with their probing, red lenses. Mer-Mer could feel the tension crackling in the air, every second stretching like an eternity as they stood frozen in the shadows.
"Stay still," Shadow-Cat whispered urgently. "If they see us, we're done for."
One automaton paused, its head cocking to the side as it scanned the grove. The others followed suit, forming a tight formation that seemed almost human in its intent to corner prey.
"We need to move," Latina urged, her voice barely a whisper. "We can't stay here forever."
Mer-Mer focused harder on the shadows around them, willing them to thicken and obscure their forms even more. It was taxing, but he could feel the darkness responding to his command.
"There's a clearing up ahead," he mouthed silently to Shadow-Cat. "If we can slip through there, we might get enough distance on them."
Suddenly, one of the automatons stopped, its mechanical gaze locking onto the very tree where Spartacus, Latina, and Ragnar crouched. The guard's arm whirred as it raised a scanning device in their direction, its red lens flickering ominously.
"Intruders detected!" it barked in its cold, metallic voice. "Initiate capture protocol."
"Run!" Mer-Mer's voice cut through the tension like a knife. He and Shadow-Cat darted into the thick underbrush, shadows cloaking their escape. The moment that command was uttered, chaos erupted.
Spartacus sprang forward, his sword slicing at the back of the nearest automaton, while Latina darted around to flank it. Ragnar lagged behind, still fumbling for his own weapon when he saw the fearsome sight of the automatons moving toward them with mechanical precision.
"They're too strong! We need to get out of here!" Ragnar shouted as he finally pulled a dagger free from his belt.
"Focus on slowing them down!" Spartacus commanded as he struck again, embedding his sword deep into an automaton's torso. Sparks flew from its steel body as it faltered but quickly regained its footing.
Latina gritted her teeth, using her spear to jab at another nearby sentinel. "I'll hold them! Just get going!"
Mer-Mer and Shadow-Cat reemerged from the shadows to lend support. Mer-Mer summoned tendrils of darkness to ensnare the automatons' legs like vines wrapping around branches. The darkness coiled tightly until they stumbled and fell.
"Now!" Mer-Mer cried. "We have to move before they recover!"
Spartacus nodded, not needing to be told twice. They took off into the dense foliage, hearing the clanking sounds of metal feet behind them.
"Where are we headed?" Latina shouted as they ran.
"Towards the Southside rebel camp!" Spartacus replied between gasps. "It's not far from here!"
As they dashed deeper into the woods that bordered the city, Shadow-Cat weaved effortlessly through trees while Mer-Mer focused on maintaining his shadow cover for everyone. The hum of machinery echoed behind them, relentless and growing louder.
"Over here!" Shadow-Cat motioned towards a narrow path through the trees just ahead—the way would lead them to a small ravine that could provide temporary cover.
They veered sharply left down the path she indicated, narrowly avoiding branches snapping back against them as they hurried onward. The cacophony of pursuit echoed in their ears—the automatons were not far behind.
Finally reaching the ravine's edge, they ducked low beneath an overhang of rock and underbrush. Breathing heavily, they pressed against the cool earth in silence and listened for the telltale signs of their pursuers.
The sounds grew nearer; mechanical voices buzzed with frustration as they searched above them.
"Assign units to perimeter—no escape route is viable," one guard droned monotonously.
"Continue scanning—re-evaluate tracking systems," another echoed back.
Mer-Mer exchanged a glance with Shadow-Cat; both understood this was not merely a delay but must also be a chance for strategy.
"We'll need weapons," he whispered urgently as the drones moved closer and closer...
"I don't think that will save us, whispered Shadow-cat. "We must somehow manipulate them, take control of them...I can attack them... but even if I break through their defenses, I don't know if my Katana will be able to hurt them. You can see the energy crackling around them. I think they've turned on some kind of defense...and besides, they're a lot. I don't think I'll be able to handle them all.."
"But how, "whispered Latina. "Solaris controls them somehow... But how?
"We have to hurry...Mer-Mer said, narrowing his eyes. I can try to manipulate them with shadow magic, but I don't know if it will work... Some if he has another idea, say it.."
"I, said Shadow-cat," I don't know if it will work... but we could try. Do you see this wire, on their heads. If we destroy it, hopefully it will break the link between Solaris and them... If not you'll try shadow magic."
"Why don't we just attack them with brute force," Spartacus suggested...
"And cut us to pieces, "Ragnar frowned." I'd better sit in the bush, I don't think they'll notice us."
You are coward! exclaimed Latina. Sitting in the bushes will do no good. They will find us eventually and cut us to pieces . If we attack them , we must beware of their weapons...they radiate this red energy... I have a bad feeling, said Latina. Whatever we do, we have to decide quickly, because every second could be our last...
