As night fell and the gladiators were locked in their cells, Mer-mer and Shadow-cat waited anxiously for the ludus to fall silent. When the last footsteps of the guards faded away, they crept cautiously to the well where Spartacus had instructed them to meet.
The Thracian was already there, his face tense in the moonlight. "I don't have much time," he whispered urgently. "But there are things you must know."
Mer-mer's fur bristled with anticipation. "What is it? Have you learned something about the Time Compass?"
Spartacus shook his head. "Not directly. But I overheard Medicus speaking with the Batiatus. They were discussing you two - and how your arrival here was no accident."
Shadow-cat leaned forward intently. "What do you mean? Are you saying we were brought here intentionally?"
"I believe so," Spartacus replied grimly.
"From what I could gather, there are forces at work beyond this ludus - powerful entities who have taken an interest in you. The Batiatus said something about you being 'key pieces in the game'."
Mer-mer felt a chill run down his spine. "What game? Who are these entities?"
"I don't know," Spartacus admitted. "But it seems your appearance in this time is part of some larger scheme. And the Time Compass is at the center of it."
Shadow-cat's eyes glinted with determination.
"Then we have no choice. We must find the compass and unravel this mystery if we ever hope to return to our own time."
"But be warned," Spartacus cautioned. "You are not the only ones seeking the compass. There are others - powerful, dangerous others - who will stop at nothing to claim it for themselves."Mer-mer nodded solemnly. "We understand the risks. But we have to try."
Spartacus glanced around warily before continued speaking. "This the second news. There is a plot afoot. I've heard whispers among some of the other gladiators - a plan for a mass escape during the Emperor's festival."
Shadow-cat's eyes narrowed. "An escape attempt? Why tell us?"
"Because," Spartacus said grimly, "I fear it may be a trap. Medicus and the Batiatus have been watching you two closely. I think they suspect you of planning something."
Mer-mer's heart sank. "So the escape plot...you think it's bait? To lure us into revealing ourselves?"Spartacus nodded.
"It's possible. Or perhaps a distraction, to keep everyone's attention while they make their real move. Either way, I advise caution."
"But why us?" Shadow-cat pressed. "What could they possibly want with two cats out of time?"
"That, I do not know," Spartacus admitted. "But there are rumors of prophecy, of beings from beyond the stars who hold the key to great power. Perhaps they believe you to be these prophesied ones."
Mer-mer shook his head in disbelief. "This is madness. We're just lost travelers trying to find our way home.""Be that as it may," Spartacus said, "you are now caught up in events beyond your control. Tread carefully, my friends. Trust no one fully. And be ready to act when the time comes."
And what is the last news?
"Lanita, has taken a special interest in you two. I overheard her talking with Ragnar. They believe you may be more than you appear."
Mer-mer felt a chill run through him. "What do you mean? What do they suspect?"
"I'm not certain," Spartacus admitted. "But I heard mention of 'the prophecy' and 'the ones who fall from the sky'. Latina seems to think your arrival here is no accident."
Shadow-cat's eyes narrowed. "The mechanical bird. It must be spying on us, reporting back to the master."Spartacus nodded grimly. "There's more. Batiatus has sent messengers to Rome. I believe he means to sell you to the highest bidder - and not just as gladiators. He's been hinting that you possess arcane knowledge or abilities. Abilities to open portals to another worlds, to see the unseen... "Mer-mer's mind reeled. Their situation had just become even more perilous. "We have to get out of here. Soon."
"Agreed," Shadow-cat said. "But we need a plan. We can't just charge blindly into escape."
Spartacus glanced around warily before speaking. "That mechanical bird that's been watching us - I've seen ones like it before. They belong to a powerful sorcerer named Solaris. He has the ability to manipulate time itself."
Shadow-cat's eyes widened.
"The Time Compass! Barbarossa mentioned Solaris had scattered its pieces across the Three Realms. Do you know anything about that?"
Spartacus shook his head. "Only rumors and whispers. But they say Solaris is always seeking rare and magical artifacts. If this Time Compass is as powerful as it sounds, he would definitely be interested in acquiring it - or preventing others from doing so."
Mer-mer frowned thoughtfully. "So you think Solaris might be behind us being sent back in time? But why? What could he want with us?"
"I don't know," Spartacus admitted. "But I do know this - you'll never find your answers trapped in this ludus. You need to escape, and soon. The upcoming games for the emperor's birthday may be your best chance.
"Very well," Spartacus said. "I will help in whatever way I can. But tread carefully. Trust no one. And above all, survive - for only the living can hope to uncover the truth."
With those ominous words, the Thracian melted back into the shadows, leaving Mer-mer and Shadow-cat alone with their racing thoughts. They now knew their path forward: master the ways of the gladiator, earn their freedom, and embark on a perilous quest across the Three Realms for the scattered pieces of the Time Compass. Only then could they hope to return to their own world - and uncover the sinister plot that had ensnared them.
But little did they know, the mechanical bird perched in the darkness overhead had heard every word. And far away, in a shadowed chamber, its master smiled coldly as he planned his next move in the great game of power and time...
