The golden-helmeted sentinel pressed the device to its chest, and a harsh, shrill sound erupted from the funnel, vibrating through the air like a violent wind. Mer-Mer felt the reverberation pierce his ears and he instinctively crouched down, trying to shield himself with his paws.

"Cover your ears!" he shouted again, but it was too late. The sound cascaded over them like an avalanche, drowning out every thought and weakening their resolve.

Wave of piercing sound erupted from the weapon, a cacophony that seemed to slice through the air itself. The sonic blast reverberated in Mer-Mer's very bones, sending a shockwave of pain through his ears. He instinctively dropped to one knee, covering his ears with his paws, but it was too late—his vision blurred, and he could see the others reeling from the assault.

"Fall back!" Shadow-Cat screamed, her voice barely piercing through the noise. She staggered as she tried to regain her footing but wasnt quick enough. The automatons surged forward, their movements swift and relentless.

Latina fell to her knees, her spear slipping from her grip as the sonic waves assaulted her senses. Spartacus stumbled back against a tree, struggling to maintain his balance. Shadow-Cat's blades clattered to the ground as she clawed at her ears in a desperate attempt to block out the noise.

Mer-Mer gritted his teeth, fighting through the agony that threatened to overwhelm him. "We have to regroup! he roared, pushing himself up despite the ringing in his ears.

Latina moved beside him, spear at the ready. "We can't let them surround us! If we stick together, we stand a chance!"

Spartacus nodded, raising his sword defiantly as he pushed against the nearest automaton coming their way. But another wave of sound blasted out, and this time it hit harder; it disoriented them all. Ragnar stumbled backward, landing on his behind as horror filled his eyes.

"It's going to get worse!" Mer-Mer shouted over the ongoing cacophony. He concentrated deep within himself, feeling for the tendrils of shadow magic swirling just beneath his skin. If he could channel enough energy, he could create a diversion strong enough to counteract the sonic assault.

But just then, another sentinel stepped into view—a towering figure clad in dark plating that absorbed light rather than reflecting it. Its red lenses glowed menacingly as it raised its weapon again.

"Time for this charade to end," the golden helmet sentinel proclaimed with chilling finality as he aimed directly at them once more." Surrender now!"

"Mer-Mer!" Shadow-Cat shouted desperately. "Now!"

Drawing upon every ounce of shadow magic he had trained so hard to master, Mer-Mer thrust both paws outward and unleashed a torrent of darkness that rushed like a wave between them and their foes. It coiled around the automatons as if seeking to snuff them out completely.

"Cover your ears!" he cried again as he concentrated fiercely on amplifying his spell.

A sudden hush fell over the chaos as Mer-Mers darkness enveloped the automatons entirely, overwhelming their senses with an unnatural silence broken only by an echoing pulse of shadow energy resonating through their mechanical forms.

"Now!" Spartacus bellowed amidst the haze of blackness, charging forward with renewed vigor and aiming for the golden helmet sentinel.

"This is our chance! Attack!" Latina rallied her companions as she finally regained her bearings and surged alongside Spartacus.

With Mer-Mer's shadows clouding their enemies' vision and muffling sound around them, they struck fast and hard. Shadow-Cat darted around unseen corners within the darkness—her claws slicing through cables and wires even as she leaped away before any retaliation could land on her.

Mer-Mer focused on keeping darkness woven tightly around them while minimizing risk to his friends. Finally regaining their momentum, they pressed onward into battle like a force of nature—moving synchronized and brandishing weapons like demon-possessed creatures.

When they finished, frozen sentinels rolled around them on the ground in strange poses.

"It's over!" cried Ragnar, seizing the moment to kiss Latina, "You're mine now!

Latina scowled and thrust her spear into his stomach, though not too hard.

" I'll hit you lower next time!" she warned him. If you want to stay half a man!"

"He's not using it anyway!" grinned Spartacus. " If you want a real man, come to me!"

Spartacus patted his chest to show off how manly he was.

"What's the matter with all of you!" frowned Latina. You defeated a few sentinels and your male ego grew to the sky...Look, Shadow-cat... How many sentinels did she take down and not a word of boasting.

The ninja-cat had listened and unexpectedly raised his hand.

I think I hear someone's footsteps... I'm not sure if it's an enemy or a friend, but be prepared for the worst...
