Gasping for breath, Alric blinked against the brightness of their beloved meadow. Sunlight streamed through lush canopies above where birds chirped merrily—a stark contrast to the darkness they had just escaped. He pushed himself up and turned to see Colin helping Roku to his feet.
"We made it," Roku breathed in disbelief, brushing dirt from his clothes as he scanned their surroundings for any sign of danger.
But even as relief flooded over them, shadows began to gather in the corners of their vision—whispers echoing from the depths of Tartarus still clinging to their minds. Alric's heart sank as he realized that while they had escaped one nightmare, another awaited them.
"What do we do now?" Roku asked uneasily as he looked at Alric, uncertainty clouding his eyes. "We need to free Lyra from Lord Seth... before he comes here! Then we need to go back and save Colin!"
Alric nodded fiercely; they couldn't let Odin or any remnants of Tartarus corrupt this sacred place. He held out the Shadow Soul before them—it pulsed ominously even here among the trees bathed in sunlight.
As they stood in the tranquil meadow, a sudden chill swept through the air. The once-clear sky began to darken, ominous clouds rolling in with unnatural speed. The lush grass beneath their feet withered and browned, as if the very life was being drained from the earth.
A cold wind whipped around them, carrying whispers of dread that seemed to echo from the shadows themselves. The trees groaned and swayed, their branches twisting into gnarled shapes that clawed at the darkening sky. Birds fell silent, and even the insects ceased their constant chorus, leaving an eerie quiet broken only by the rising howl of the wind.
Lightning crackled across the sky, illuminating the meadow in brief, stark flashes that cast grotesque shadows. Thunder rumbled in the distance, growing closer with each passing moment. The air grew thick and heavy, charged with an otherworldly energy that made the hair on their arms stand on end.
As the storm reached its crescendo, a figure materialized at the edge of the meadow. Tall and imposing, cloaked in shadows that seemed to writhe and pulse with a life of their own, Lord Seth strode forward. His eyes glowed with an infernal light, and each step he took left a trail of withered grass in his wake.
"Greetings, mortals," he intoned, his voice a low rumble that seemed to come from everywhere and nowhere at once. "I see you've brought me a gift."
Alric clutched the Shadow Soul tightly, feeling its dark energy pulse against his palm. "Where's Lyra?" he demanded, trying to keep the fear from his voice.
"So, you've escaped the Shadow Realm . How... disappointing." His gaze swept over them, cold and calculating. "But not unexpected. You've brought me something, haven't you?"
Alric clutched the Shadow Soul tightly, feeling its corrupting influence pulse against his skin. "We have what you want," he said, his voice steady despite the fear churning in his gut. "Now give us Lyra."
Lord Seth's lips curled into a cruel smile. "Of course. A deal is a deal, after all." He waved his hand, and a shimmering portal appeared beside him. From its depths stumbled a figure - Lyra, but not as they remembered her.
Her once vibrant eyes were dull and lifeless, her skin ashen and marked with twisting shadows. She moved as if in a trance, her gaze unfocused and distant.
"Lyra!" Roku cried out, rushing forward. But as he approached, Lyra recoiled, hissing like a cornered animal.
"Stay back!" she snarled, her voice distorted and unrecognizable. "I don't know you!"
Alric stepped forward, his heart breaking at the sight of his girlfriend. "Lyra, it's us. We've come to save you."
But Lyra only shook her head violently, backing away. "No, no, no! You're not real! This is just another trick, another torment!"
Lord Seth laughed, the sound like breaking glass. "Oh, she's real enough. But the shadows have... reshaped her. Made her better, stronger. She serves me now."
