I walk in the house after work. "Antonio I'm home" I yell out taking my shoes and jacket off before putting them away. I don't get a response which causes my eyebrows to furrow in confusion. I find him in the kitchen staring at an onion almost accusingly. It's about inches away from his face and his eyebrow is raised as he whispers something in Spanish. I stand there with an amused expression as I cross my arms and lean against the kitchen entrance.

"I think it's told you everything it knows." I say chuckling. He looks up at me before crossing his own arms and turning away like a pouty child. "What are you doing?" I laugh softly.

"Nothing.. I was just..." He says, his accent thick and prominent.

"Just?" I urge him to go on.

He huffs murmuring, "I was trying to figure out the English name for it. I was trying to remember the name you told me."

I smile gently, "Baby, Why didn't you just ask? You don't have to be embarrassed by it?" I walk over hugging him like he's fragile. I knew how frustrating learning English was and is for him. Ever since we moved here he's been really stressed about it.

"Here.. why don't we learn it again?" I coo softly. He nods, running his hands through his hair.

"Ok so that is...?" I start.

"Tomato?" He responds with a cringe at his own pronunciation. A bit off but he got it right none the less.

"Good, it's pronounced Tomato." I correct. He nods happy he got it right.

"Now... How about this one? The one you were looking at earlier. I know you remember it baby come on." I hold the onion up and he studies it a moment.

"Mushroom?" He asks timidly.

"No.. remember when I said the Mushroom is really small but the.. blank... Is really big. It's the two you'd always get mixed up." I urge.

"Onion!" He tells excitedly.

"Yes! Onion! Good Job! I told you that you knew it!" We hug each other jumping up and down in happiness. We cook dinner happily as I teach him some more English, which he excitedly remembers and adds to his vocabulary.
