(Y/N)'s eyes blinked open slowly. She lay still for a few seconds, staring up at the damp ceiling with a mild grimace on her face. She carefully lifted herself up and pulled the blanket from her legs. She rubbed her eyes and slid off the springy mattress that squeaked as she moved. She glanced passingly at the closed curtains over the window of the apartment and noticed the small glint of the streetlamp shining through the slit. Other than that, there was no other light in the night outside. She rolled her shoulders back, feeling a slight ache spread across her shoulder blades. She let out an unpleasant hum at the pain. She left the tiny bedroom she had settled in and walked into the small kitchenette to find Jin sitting in front of the television cross-legged.
(Y/N) observed him for a long moment. She stared at the back of his head. His blond hair was tousled and matted. She spoke up, "Have you slept?"
Jin let out a yelp and jumped to his feet. He spun around to (Y/N), his chest heaving with fright, though he instantly calmed at the sight of her. He exhaled shakily and shook his head. "No."
"Why?" (Y/N) questioned. She moved towards the kitchen and flicked the kettle on.
Jin seemed bashful as he spoke. He shrugged slowly. "I was worried something may happen. We shouldn't sleep at the same time."
(Y/N) nodded. She hesitated before speaking. "I guess you're right."
Jin's face broke into a smile as if he was expecting to have been scolded for being careful. He watched (Y/N) closely as she made a cup of instant coffee.
"Well, I'd suggest you go to sleep now," she moved towards Jin and sat down next to him, "but I'm just about to go find some food. And I don't think I should leave you alone asleep."
"I can stay up."
"Are you sure?" She glanced at him with a worrisome expression on her face.
Jin nodded instantly. "I am. We need to be safe- We need to keep you safe!"
(Y/N) cracked a smile. "I can handle myself."
"I know!" Jin exclaimed. "I'm not insinuating you can't- Of course, she's not weak- But we should protect you! She can't-"
(Y/N) placed her hand on Jin's. "It's fine." She said gently. "I appreciate your concern."
Jin grinned widely. "Thank you." He breathed.
Following their first night in the small abandoned flat, (Y/N) left Jin in the apartment to go out and look for food. Now that she was alone, without her family or friends, she realised that she had to fend for herself. It was overwhelming. She didn't know what she was going to do, really. She hadn't put enough thought into it. A sudden impulse to leave her life behind and live with a man with severe mental health issues was certainly not something she had expected to happen but she hadn't felt any regret. Not yet.
She felt secure in her decision.
The world was falling to pieces and the heroes were losing control. Rather than joining the side that the civilians were losing faith in, she decided to make her own side; a side that wasn't enforcing the ideals she didn't agree with; a side that wasn't resorting to full-blown violence as its sole solution. She was a middle ground between the heroes and villains. She didn't want black and white anymore. She realised this was what she had always wanted but she was never presented with an opportunity for her to come to such a realisation. Now, she knew, was the time that awaited her. This is what she needed to do.
